Our projects in 2022 - REVIEW
Podcast series ONE TRACK TO THE FUTURE - Part 1, released in May
The One Track to the Future podcast series
Expert Talk: Are monorails the most elegant solution for urban mass transport?
with Karin Helmstaedt (Moderator), Marko Kroenke (IMA President) and Carlos Banchik (Immediate Past President IMA)
Monorails - a sleek way of public mass transit in urban areas
Monorail systems exists for more than 100 years and are part of many Metro networks around the globe. This presentation talks about how Monorails are embedded in the context of mass transit systems and the aspects of the project scope with all advantages and disadvantages. There are technical explanations, ongoing projects descriptions, and applications, where Monorail fit best in urban areas.
World Market Study for Monorail Systems by SCI - published in September
Market overview - Market outlook until 2035 - Development of fleet - Development of network length
The study introduces an overview of different monorail systems and explains the special application within the context of total turnkey. With available data and sound research, the study presents the current market with an outlook into the mid-term and long-term future of monorails as a public transport system.
The Market Study is available on the website Shop von SCI to purchase or a PDF preview to download. Our International Monorail Association member will receive a free version of the report.
Performance Specification for a Turnkey Mass Transit Monorail System - published in September 2022
Purpose: Establish applicable turnkey system performance requirement, based on international standards, to assist consultants, authorization bodies, etc.
Main content: Proven best practices for optimized total system approach for safe and efficient operation (e.g. passenger capacity, fleet-sizing)
The International Monorail Association has developed a performance catalogue for the total system for Monorail including system interfaces, components, subsystems, vehicles, and the infrastructure: the “Turnkey System Performance Specification for Mass Transit Monorail”.
The Specification describes the performance of an entire monorail system to enable operators and other stakeholder to understand and optimise a turnkey system with respect of norms, standards and requirements. It gives the vehicle and infrastructure supply industry a better insight into technology requirements and avoids system-specific isolated solutions. This performance-oriented standardisation will ensure more competition along the supply chain and further strengthen the safety and economic efficiency of the overall system.
This document is now the first official edition of the service catalog published openly available on IMA webpage. It is created by multiple experts from different disciplines from around the world. The team collected latest technology know-how, experience and improvements and has been intensively working over the last years to generate this specification. It shall be updated periodically.

Advantages of a MEMBERSHIP at IMA
Free access to the World Market Study on Monorail Systems, in cooperation with SCI Verkehr, published this year at InnoTrans.
Free access to the 'Technical Performance Specification of a Mass Transit Monorail System', a 200+ page functional description of all monorail subsystems, edited by monorail experts over the last two years and now completed.
The highlight is the annual Monorailex conference, with an average of 50 participants and 20 technical presentations on all topics of monorail systems such as infrastructure, track construction, vehicles, subcomponents, research, approval, operation and testing. This is usually held close to InnoTrans and every other year at different locations worldwide. This is followed by technical visits to operators and other programming. In 2023, we plan to be in Sao Paulo. There is a greatly reduced price as a member for the conference.
Network to our members, who come from all sectors: Operators, total system manufacturers, component suppliers, regulatory bodies, universities and research institutes, consultants and engineering firms. This is also the place to ask specific questions and request support.
Regular updates in the newsletter on new projects and information on monorails.
If you are also interested to become a member you can sign up with the registration form at the end of our charter or contact info@monorailex.org for any further question and a first contact.
