EV charging tariff report published today

Back in 2018 Scottish Government announced its ambition to phase out the need for new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030, with a key part of achieving that goal to encourage and support the take-up of electric vehicles (EVs).

In helping support the adoption of EVs, local authorities have provided free or low-cost EV charging. But as we start to see more and more EVs on our roads, and with that the need for more chargepoints, the current pricing structure is not sustainable, which is also detracting private sector investment.

This morning at the annual EV Summit in London, Jenny Gilruth, Minister for Transport highlighted a new report produced by our Net Zero Transport team, Public EV Charging in Scotland: Insight Report on Tariffs, that states free charging is resulting in lost revenues for local authorities and hindering commercial investment.

The Report highlights that significant new investment is needed over the next 5-10 years to deliver a comprehensive network of chargepoints to meet the needs of a rapidly growing EV market.

Digital infrastructure Playbook published to support increased connectivity

Following the launch in the summer of an online platform showing locations of over 140,000 public sector land, buildings and street furniture assets across the Tay Cities region where mobile network equipment can be installed, a 'How-To' guide has now been published to help other public bodies identify assets for mobile network equipment.

Working with many partners, our Digital Infrastructure team has published their Infralink-Exchange Playbook with the aim of helping local authorities improve mobile connectivity in their areas.

Keeping with the EV theme, Alastair Young from our Net Zero Transport team has recently written an article for Fleetworld Magazine talking about the work we, together with Transport Scotland and local authorities are doing to help accelerate the delivery of an expanded public charging network across Scotland.

In the article, Alastair highlights: "It's important we continue to listen to the concerns of EV drivers and recognise the needs of chargepoint operators as we seek investment of many millions of pounds in the Scottish EV charging market and deliver an accessible, reliable and affordable public charging network that works for all."

New design and performance standard to transform Scotland’s approach to affordable housing

A new net zero carbon design and performance standard has been published that could provide a significant boost to Scotland’s affordable housing sector, as part of a standardised approach for local authorities and housing associations to adopt across a range of future developments

The energy-efficient design and performance standard has been created by the Edinburgh Home Demonstrator (EHD) programme.

The £1m EHD programme – involving our Improving Construction Delivery team and partners from the City of Edinburgh Council, Offsite Solutions Scotland, Edinburgh Napier University, the University of Edinburgh and Built Environment – Smarter Transformation (BE-ST) – is trialling the new approach for high-performing affordable homes.
