Community Links is growing and we’re seeking an Outreach and Communications Lead to increase the reach and effectiveness of Community Links’ communications across the province. We’re embarking on a provincial current-state assessment for the community-based senior serving (CBSS) sector.
The Outreach and Communications Lead will play a key role in developing the communications plan and materials related to the current state assessment as well as other initiatives (such as micro-grant program and communications hub). They’ll create share back tools based on research results and support the writing and designing of final reports. The Outreach and Communications lead will be responsible for designing and overseeing the organizational systems for outreach and engagement for
these initiatives.

Home Warming offers no-charge energy assessments and free home upgrades to eligible Nova Scotians.
It’s important that people living on lower incomes benefit from energy efficiency and feel comfortable at home. That’s why Efficiency NS offer a no-charge energy assessment and potential upgrades to income-qualified homeowners.
If they discover that draft-proofing, insulation or other efficiency options can help make heating & cooling your home substantially more affordable and comfortable, they will install the upgrades at no cost to you.

The Seniors Care Grant has been expanded to up to $1000, from a previous amount of $500, to include a one-time $250 Home Heating Assistance Grant and an additional $250 for Hurricane Fiona related costs. Anyone who has previously received the grant will automatically receive this support. Others who meet the eligibility requirements can apply for the grant.
Applications opened September 1, 2022.
This grant will be available to all eligible Nova Scotians 65 and older, including people who have already received the Seniors Care Grant and the Home Assistance Rebate Program in the past year. The grant is available for the cost of oil, wood, electricity, and other energy sources.
Eligibility Criteria include:
• You still reside in your home
• The property or lease agreement is in your name or includes your name
• You are 65 years of age or over
• You have an annual household net income of $37,500 or less

The Property Tax Rebate for Seniors program offers eligible seniors a rebate of half of their property taxes, up to $800.
To qualify for the rebate, seniors need to meet eligibility criteria, including:
-- 2021 municipal residential property taxes are paid in full
-- their name is included on the property taxes
-- they receive or are eligible to receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) or Guaranteed Income Supplement - Allowance from Service Canada.
Applications are open until December 31, 2022. Applicants who received the rebate last year will receive an application by mail.
Applicants will also be able to apply for the Heating Assistance Rebate Program on the Property Tax Rebate for Seniors application. You can receive up to $200 if you qualify for the Heating Assistance Rebate Program.

The Sustainable Communities Challenge Fund is a provincial grant program for local climate action in Nova Scotia. The first round of funding is now open for applications.
The Fund will support community efforts to reduce or remove greenhouse gas emissions, or to prepare for and respond to the impacts of a changing climate.
The following groups are eligible to apply:
Nova Scotia municipalities
First Nations bands and tribal councils
Post-secondary institutions
Registered non-profit organizations in Nova Scotia
There are two important dates in the application process:
December 2, 2022: Pre-screening deadline
December 16, 2022: Full application deadline

It is important that community partnerships demonstrate a shared purpose to come together for the good of Nova Scotia, working to improve well-being of our customers, employees, and communities across the province.
Launched in Fall 2021, the For the Good of Our Community Fund, is a pillar of the NSLC community investment program, awarding one-time grants of up to $20,000 to Nova Scotia non-profit organizations through partnerships with our suppliers.
Eligibility Criteria:
• Applicants must be a registered charity or non-profit organization that works to support communities within Nova Scotia
• Organizations must be working to address areas of critical community need within Nova Scotia
• Projects and initiatives should be aligned to one of our community investment focus areas
• Preference will be given to organizations working on projects and initiatives that promote inclusivity and provide strong benefits to equity seeking or other underserved groups and communities

Shannex Community Spirit Fund 2022–2023 Guidelines
The Shannex Cares Community Program provides a framework that allows it to influence real change and make a difference in the lives of all seniors.
It supports programs and initiatives that create visible and meaningful opportunities for elders to be seen, heard and valued for their wisdom and talents and seek to dispel myths that seniors are disengaged with the world around them.
Through Shannex Cares, the Community Spirit Fund offers funding for projects and initiatives that support its focus areas of:
• seniors’ wellness
• seniors’ active living
• seniors’ social connections

This November, as part of Radon Action Month, Health Canada is encouraging Canadians to test their homes for radon. Radon is the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, leading to the deaths of more than 3,200 Canadians each year.
Radon is a radioactive gas naturally produced by the breakdown of uranium in the ground. It can easily enter homes undetected through cracks and gaps in the floors and walls that are in contact with the ground. You can’t see it, smell it or taste it. All homes and buildings have some level of radon. The only question is how much and the only way to know is to test.
Find out what you can do on the Take Action on Radon web page, and don’t forget that some local libraries also have lending programs for radon detectors.
The Digital Literacy for Seniors Program helps anyone 55 or older learn how to use their electronic devices.
The Digital Literacy for Seniors Program offers one-on-one and/or group support, either in-house (following NS Health COVID protocols) or online.
Digital Literacy for Seniors Program are being offered across the Maritimes until December 15. The DLFS Program is made possible by the Tatamagouche Centre from the New Horizons for Seniors grant.

Nova Scotia Housing Needs Assessment
The Housing Needs Assessment is one of the recommendations from the 2021 Affordable Housing Commission Report and is intended to further understanding of the needs of Nova Scotians. The Housing Needs Assessment will provide data and information on current and projected housing needs for each of the 49 municipalities in Nova Scotia. It will help identify gaps in current and projected housing requirements, and ensure that future investments close those gaps. While some municipalities have already completed their housing needs assessment, this is not the case for the vast majority.
This information will be invaluable to all levels of government, private sector, and community housing partners as they work to collectively improve the housing situation in Nova Scotia in both the short and long-term. The results will not only inform the number of housing units that each community needs, but also the type of housing that needs to be built.
The data and information collected will also be used to inform the development of two new Housing Strategies: the Provincial Housing Strategy, as well as the Student Housing Strategy, which is focused on housing for post-secondary students studying in Nova Scotia.

Join Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario on November 29th for a webinar on “Managing Your Money During Challenging Times: A Guide for Seniors", presented by Richard Haggins, Senior Education Facilitator, Credit Canada Debt Solutions.
In recognition of Financial Literacy Month, EAPO is collaborating with Credit Canada, Canada’s first and longest-standing credit counselling agency, to host a webinar for seniors or those planning for their future retirement.
The presentation will cover the following areas and answer questions on key issues related to managing and protecting finances:
- Managing your money in the retirement years : Wondering if and when is it a good idea to take pensions after your 65? Learn about your options.
- Dealing with debt in retirement: Learn how to manage debt. Did you know one-third of retirees have some form of debt!
- Preparing for the unexpected in retirement
- Financial abuse prevention – Become knowledgeable on how to recogize signs of how older adults are financially taken advantage of and actions to prevent it.
