A virtual opportunity for High School Students Interested in Journalism and/or
Police Practices at Schools
ProPublica

This Spring, ProPublica and the Chicago Tribune published “The Price Kids Pay,” a groundbreaking investigation that found schools across Illinois routinely work with police to issue students tickets for minor offenses — infractions that can lead to costly fines. Reporters Jodi S. Cohen and Jennifer Smith Richards detailed how some schools violated state law.

Now, in a special event for student journalists, these two reporters will explain how they uncovered this disturbing pattern of policing in schools and how young reporters can pursue stories at their own schools.

Ticketed on campus: How to investigate police ticketing of students at your school
Thursday, December 1
3:30 p.m. Central time
Register Here

Cohen and Smith Richards will talk about the public documents that can reveal what’s happening inside schools and the best journalistic practices for pursuing this subject thoroughly and fairly. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to hear firsthand from a Chicago-area high school that used the investigation’s findings to conduct reporting on its campus.

Do you know a student journalist or student newspaper advisor? Share this event with them!

Hope you can join us,

Sign up for another Roundtable Discussion on Dec. 10, 1-3 pm!
Every school year Civitas likes to provide opportunity for students from all over St. Louis and beyond to gather and talk about whatever is on their minds. We had a great discussion in September that ended with several topic suggestions uncovered because we ran out of time, including LGBTQ+ rights and income inequality in the St. Louis area and beyond. So we've scheduled a "Part 2" at Oak Bend Library on Saturday, December 10 from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm to continue the dialogue. Join us for this fun afternoon. We'll have snacks and beverages.
Click here to sign up now and earn a Game Changer point and two service hours. If there is something in particular on your mind to discuss, you can list it on the sign up form. Hope to see you there!
