A Note from Lynn and Elaine

We hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoyed time with family and loved ones. All of us as PBM are grateful for you, our PD family. This Tuesday, November 29th, is Giving Tuesday and we need your support so we can continue to serve the PD community with programs and services free of charge. You can Double the Impact of your gift thanks to a generous donor who has challenged us with a $50,000 matching gift. This would enable PBM to reach farther and offer more exercise classes, expand our support groups and mentoring programs and recruit more expert speakers. A gift of any amount will help us reach our goal and help the PD community. Please join us in this effort with a tax-deductible gift to PBD on Giving Tuesday. With your help, we can do this!!!
Also, be sure to use the link below to join the virtual PBM Boxing Classes with Toni who is a Rock Steady trained instructor. PMB has hired Toni to offer these classes free of charge to our members.
Happy Holidays,
Lynn & Elaine

Birdwatching Has Big Mental-Health
Benefits. Here’s How to Start

Joan Strassmann can rattle off trivia about birds as quickly as a Peregrine falcon can blast through the sky.

Did you know that Northern flickers coax their young to leave their nests by continuously shrieking? That American coots sometimes sneak eggs into other hens’ nests? That white brows on a male white-throated sparrow indicate he might be a philanderer?

Here’s another fun, feathered fact: Birdwatching—or even simply listening—can lead to an array of mental-health benefits in humans, including long-lasting stress relief.

Parkinson’s patients and researchers
search for exercise ‘prescription’

Retired running coach Bob Sevene, 79, struggled after his 2019 Parkinson’s disease diagnosis. The longtime runner suddenly began leaning to the right and was unable to straighten up. He started wearing a back brace and using a walker.

A year ago, Sevene began twice-weekly exercise classes designed for Parkinson’s patients that include high-intensity bouts of noncontact boxing. He also started daily 25-minute speed sessions on a stationary bike and running brief sprints in the hallway outside his apartment. Read more…

"PBM helps to provide community-based exercise and wellness classes with specially trained instructors that research has strongly concluded is so important  for the management of PD."

We need volunteers to help with PBM social media, nonprofit accounting and recruiting people with PD to our PBM program at the Bridgeport YMCA. if interested, please contact elainegrant@parkinsonsbodyandmind.org
Across all PD research, 85 percent of trials face delays and 30 percent never get started because of the chronic shortage of volunteers. This means people with Parkinson’s wait longer for better solutions to manage the disease.
