HOT LIT!
curated by scott alexander hess novelist/teacher/queer new yorker

I absolutely adore the holiday season and my annual Holigay Gift Guide is a joy to put together. I love cruising social media for fun, thought-provoking and evocative items that might make sassy stocking stuffers. So enjoy!

My dear friend Sebasjiun is a glittering diamond of a man. A real renaissance talent he is a singer, photographer, artist and writer (he also looks amazing in drag). His book Seduced on Madison has that perfect mix of chic and intrigue. Sebasjiun describes it best: After several nights of spotting her prey our femme fetal makes her move and is victorious. Seduction does come with great rewards AND great surprises! Maybe this has happened to you on Madison Avenue. Written in simple verse Sebasjiun creates a witty poem about a stimulating subject.

The always amazing Alexander Chee is on point this season as editor of The Best American Essays 2022. Described as: A collection of the year’s best essays, selected by award-winning writer Alexander Chee an essayist of “virtuosity and power” (Washington Post). He selects twenty essays out of thousands that represent the best examples of the form published the previous year.

Grab this one and curl up with your cocoa!

I first spied artist Grant Shaffer's (@nyseecomic) wonderfully whimsical imagery on Manhattan's Art Link Kiosks. His NY See comic series is a ton of fun and check out all of his illustrations for that truly unique holiday gift. I suspect we will be seeing more of Grant and his artwork in 2023!

I've covered the ever-edgy Bruce LaBruce for years and was thrilled to discover his two volume photo book on instagram. Expect the unexpected with this forever avant garde one of a kind talent. The two volumes include: candid snapshots of a life filled with fun, sex and travels at times in contrast to LaBruce’s more transgressive and extreme artistic work.

I love discovering new voices and  Loose Lips: A Gay Sea Odyssey by Joseph Brennan caught my eye with it's artful cover! The description drew me closer: Dockyard mansex adventurer Olli Turner has stowed away on the biggest ship the world has ever known...Yet in March 1940 war is churning. That short coastal voyage to Southampton he was expecting turns into a daring dash across the Atlantic and plants instead seeds of a years-long life at sea.

I first met Elizabeth Sanders Greyson during my MFA at The New School when I was introduced to her lush and lyrical writing. Over the years she has never ceased to amaze me (she is a writer of the 2022 Jennifer Lawrence film Causeway ) and her latest LIZ+LUKAS candles are gorgeous. She describes them as: Our refined rustic candles, inspired by city and nature, combine alluring and unexpecting scent-pairs in modern vessels that take you on an olfactory travelogue of life and love. We have our Fernweh fall collection, a Cocktail-Infused candle line, and some holiday ones. All of our candles are vegan, non-toxic, and eco-friendly.

I sometimes wonder how in the world I have met so many multi-talented people!

You can't go wrong with the Queer Art Winterfest no matter what holiday gift you seek. Check this out at 3 Dollar Bill, 260 Meserole Street, Brooklyn, NY and let me know what you bought!

A wonderful poetry offering from my current publisher (Rebel Satori Press) Invisible History: The Collected Poems of Walta Borawski has a great recommendation from Allen Ginsberg. The poems are truthful, snappy, plenty of low life & local detail, sparky mind of the young poet sassing & observing his environment, gay & grim, still romantic. Who doesn’t love romance? Lots of intelligence in the line, mindful measure of spoken speech music. —Allen Ginsberg

For those super-sassy and fun people on your gift list consider something as frisky as they are! A copy of Natural Pursuits magazine (the dance issue is a hoot) described as: Natural Pursuits features art that celebrates casual nudity in the queer community.

And who doesn't need an ornament from drag star Dina Martina!

Hot Lit Finale!
