Oct 11 Meeting Recap

We had about 31 people at our meeting, held at our usual location: the Presbyterian Church – Broomfield. At the meeting we announced the winners of the Fall Member Show, welcomed 3 new and potential members and a couple former members who revisited, and enjoyed a great demonstration of pastel art.

We were not able to complete the October meeting agenda to give our guest artist, who substituted at the last minute when our original guest artist was unable to attend, a chance to avoid the worst of the cross town rush hour traffic. We had also intended to discuss the continuing difficulties/questions surrounding how and where to sign your artwork and how to determine how to price your artwork. However, due to the change in the agenda to allow our guest artist to leave early, we will try to discuss this at the November
meeting.

For the Fall Member Show we had 66 entries from 32 members. The Show was judged by Javier Flores. The 2022 winners were as follows:
  • Honorable Mention Awards to Melanie Fischer for “Seed”, Nancy Read for “Lemoncello” and John Yurchak for “Admiralty Head Lighthouse in Fog”.
  • Merit Awards to Sally Bullers for “The Rocky Mountains”, Jane Doak for “Arrangement For a Red Room” and Dave Shelley for “Tennessee Mill”.
  • 3rd Place to Jake Pinello for “Lee’s Ferry”.
  • 2nd Place to Jill Riggin for “Between a Rock and a Hard Spot”.
  • 1st Place to Anne Schopp for “A Kiss”
  • Judge’s Choice Award to Monique Gray for “Abandoned”.
Photographs of all the winners can be viewed on the Art Guild website where we have a YouTube slide show (also linked below).

Members held a brief discussion on the pending changes to the Board structure that was brought up at the September meeting and discussed in the September Newsletter. Gale Simonson provided some detail about the need for everyone to participate in the Guild activities and the areas where more help is needed such as the website, publicity, social media, planning of activities and demonstrations, and in assistance for the member show. Dave Shelley stressed the need for newer members to volunteer to start “filling the pipeline” for future Board members and officers.

The topic of whether members have any issues with finding the information about the Guild that they need or want was brought up and very briefly discussed. No issues were identified.

Cliff Austin provided an interesting demonstration and discussion of painting with soft pastels. He also discussed his approach to creating a painting (practice, study and learn your weak points) and his preferences for paper (toned and sanded La Carte, attached to foam core using 3M’s 568 adhesive sheets), pastels (soft, Sennelier) and venue (Plein air). His approach is to start fast and bold to get the major elements blocked in, slow down for the body of the painting, and go very slowly to get the details correct. He pointed out that doing pastels is like painting and drawing at the same time and that the colors are mostly pigment and will last hundreds of years as they were new. Cliff is a graduate of Denver Institute of Technology and the Rocky Mountain School of Art and has been painting and illustrating since 1980 when he graduated from RMSA.

Nov 8 Meeting Recap

About 36 people attended our meeting, held at our usual location: the Presbyterian Church – Broomfield. At the meeting we enjoyed an art supply and book swap, primarily due to a generous donation of books and art material from a former watercolorist. We also signed up for this year’s holiday party, ratified new Board members by acclimation, and had a brief discussion about pricing and signing our artwork.

Three members were ratified as new Board members: Gale Simonson, Joanna Barraras, and James Ball. They join Tanya Tenorio, Dave and Judy Shelley, Kim T., and Camie Rigirozzi to act as a leadership team to help guide the Art Guild for the next year. Cathy Carpenter will no longer serve as Secretary but has agreed to continue to produce the monthly newsletter.

Dave Heffner played a recording of music he composed to play during a slide show of Art Guild member artwork. Dave titled the work the Broomfield Suite in D Major. The musical accompaniment to the artwork slide show is intended to play on the Guild’s website to increase the community’s knowledge of the work our artists are capable of. He will program the slide show to be in harmony with the beautiful music. The piece will last a little over 3 minutes; he wants to have at least 20 pieces of art, but no more than 33.

One of the original owners of the Particulars Art Gallery in Lafayette, was our guest artist. Suzanne Connolly-Howe is a ceramic sculpture artist and a textile artist who paints, among other items, colorful silk scarves. Her very interesting demonstration was to show how she applies watercolors to the silk after she has painted on the masking fluid which keeps the colors from all blending together. Most members joined her in adding some colors to the sample she had brought with her to see for ourselves how the colors acted on the material.

The art supply and book swap was very successful and by the end of the meeting very few items remained. Members were encouraged to send a thank you to the donor artist. Next month we will hold our annual Holiday Party on December 13. Food will be catered by iPie. There will also be a gift exchange and an interactive demonstration of liquid watercolor by Jill Riggin and Patty Jones.
