Mental Health Tip

Practicing gratitude is an important tool everyone can use to increase their mental well-being. It is about not only noticing, but also taking the time to appreciate and express thanks for what you have. It is incredibly easy to focus on and spend large amounts of time thinking about what is going wrong or what you don't have. Gratitude is about taking SOME of that time and shifting gears.
Practicing gratitude regularly doesn't just allow temporary respite from negative thinking, it has also been shown to have physiological, psychological and social benefits. Such benefits include lower blood pressure, increased joy, happiness, and optimism, and experiencing less isolation.

How can you practice gratitude?

There are many ways to practice gratitude. One such way is to pick a time in your day when you can think about or share with others three things you are grateful for. This could be done before you go to sleep, at dinner, or first thing in the morning.

Another way to practice gratitude is to keep a gratitude journal, where you can write about ordinary moments to be grateful for or valued aspects of your life, such as the people in it.

It is easy to forget to practice gratitude in our busy lives. If you want to try and make a habit of practicing gratitude, start with small, doable goals.
