Welcome to FICDO's (https:/ficdo.org) November newsletter. In this edition, we will update you with highlights of what we have been up to during the past four weeks. As always, we thank you for enabling us to enable our community.

"Education Program" rebranded as "Integrated Young Persons' Support Program"

FICDO's Education Program started in 2019 with the provision of meals and school materials for 30 young persons.  Taking into account the wide range of services that we are providing, FICDO's Board has decided to rebrand the program as 'Integrated Young Persons' Support (IYPS) Program'.  As of October 2022, we serve 98 school-age children by providing basic materials and psycho-social supports.  Our service is not only driven by compassion but also hope that the children will be able to break free of the yokes of poverty if given the necessary tools. As always, we wish to thank our supporters for their contribution in making a difference in the lives of these children.

A New Edition of Sponsors' Handbook

Are you one of those people who want the very best for children? Does news of deprivation and the extreme poverty of millions of children in our world trouble you?  We won't promise to 'fix' world poverty. But here is an opportunity to turnaround the life of a child trapped in extreme poverty. You can "adopt a child" without taking the child out of her/his community. For just 200 USD per academic calendar (10 months), FICDO can provide the basic material and psycho-social needs (listed above) for the child to stay in school.  If you wish to take part in the 'Sponsorship Program', please contact us at info@ficdo.org and we will send you the handbook that contains details of our program including the children's profiles.

Supplementary Classes

Supplementary weekend classes have started this month for children in FICDO's Integrated Young Persons' Support (IYPS) Program. We have started with two groups (those in Grade five and six), but classes will be organised in the coming weeks for the rest of the children. We are grateful to our volunteers including teachers from primary and secondary schools.  We are determined to give, as much as we can, the necessary tools for the children to realise their potentials.
#Everylittlehelps #Communitysupport #Womenempowerment

FICDO's injera-baking (income generating) pilot project for women that kicked off in October is progressing well. The women are easing into the new routine, and furnishing their workshop as they go along. Last week, they got a couple of old tables on which they will neatly arrange the freshly baked injera. We are grateful to Fitche Polytechnic College for donating these tables.

#Everylittlehelps

This month, we received ten dozen soft-drinks from local soft-drinks distributor Ato Melaku Feleke.  Our children had the luxury of having the soft drinks with their meals, just for a change. We are grateful to Ato Melaku.

Stationery Donation

We received stationery worth 72k birr from the North Shoa (Salale) Zone Education Bureau. The stationery was donated by Ethio-Telecom for distribution by local authorities to schools and NGOs like ours.

"Menstrual Kits for Rural Girls" Campaign

Dr Derartu Negash, a health practitioner in our community is leading a campaign to provide menstrual kits for girls in rural schools.  FICDO is proud to partner with Dr Derartu Negash to alleviate the problem of "period poverty" in our communities. We donated ten boxes of menstrual hygiene kits so that Dr Derartu distributes them to rural schools outside Fitche Town. We encourage all our supporters to support Dr Derartu's noble initiative. You can reach her directly (Drderartunegash@gmail.com) or through us (info@ficdo.org).

Congratulations to Tsedey!

Tsedey Deresse Gashe, a member of FICDO's Global Resource Mobilisation (GRM) Team, has been recognised by the Mayor of Houston, Texas,  for her work to improve community relations and women empowerment.  Tsedey has a heart for serving and joined our Team last year.  The FICDO Team would like to congratulate Tsedey for the well-deserved recognition she earned. Well done, Tsedey, and keep the good work!

Quick Facts on Those We Serve

  • 100%: Young people whose families/guardians have no reliable income even for basic needs such as food.
  • 60% : Young people who have lost one or both parents.
  • 80% : Young people raised by single parents or nonparent guardians.
Our program not only ensures the survival of the young people through the provision of basic needs, but also gives them education opportunities so that they may breakout from cyclical generational poverty.
