BROCKTON'S SWAG SHOP IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS

What’s better than getting your holiday gifts sorted early? Supporting Brockton in the process!

The much-anticipated Brockton Swag Shop is now open for business, just in time for the holidays. The shop offers amazing Brockton gear, such as Yeti mugs, Nalgene bottles, cosy Brockton fleeces and more. Stock is limited, however, there will be another opportunity to order in the new year.

*Note: These items are not to be worn in replacement of the Brockton uniform. All items can be worn to and from school, as well as outside during recess or Outdoor Education.

GIVING TUESDAY

This past Tuesday, we celebrated Giving Tuesday at morning drop-off with donuts, music, and community connection. As a not-for-profit organization, Brockton relies on donations from our community to support programming, facilities, and financial aid each year.

If you have already given to the Annual Fund this year, thank you! If you would still like to give, please contact advancement@brocktonschool.com, or donate online using our secure donation form

GRADE 9 TRIP TO THE CHEAKAMUS CENTRE

On Friday, November 25th, the Grade 9 students ventured out to the Cheakamus Centre. This field trip was the first day of an interdisciplinary unit between Science and Individuals & Societies, in which students will seek to address the issue of balancing the needs of nature with the needs of humans. Students had a great time learning about ethnobotany from a member of the Squamish Nation, and evaluated the extent to which salmon hatcheries are helpful in the short and long term.

GRADE 6 HUMAN RIGHTS MUSEUM

The 2022 Human Rights Museum, titled “Speak Up, Not Down,” showcased work from the youngest members of the Senior School.

We had 2 special guests attend the Museum this year from BC’s Office of the Human Rights Commissioner, Chitha Manoranjan and Emily Chan, as well as Indigenous artist, filmmaker, and educator, Nova Weipert. It was wonderful to have parents and students from Grades 5-12 celebrate this learning with us too. In total, we had over 200 guests pass through the Museum and our Grade 6s were absolute rockstars. Way to speak up, not down, and be upstanders Grade 6!

OUTDOOR EDUCATION

One of the best things about being outdoors is the ability to unplug and spend time in the forests. It also means being further away from clinics and hospitals, so it is important to be well-versed in first-aid. This week in Outdoor Education, the Grade 5 students participated in a mini ‘Wilderness First Aid’ course from Coast Wilderness Medical Training. The interconnectedness between injuries and internal body systems was explored through patient assessment, treating major wounds, splints, and hypothermic wraps.

HALLOWEEN CANDY DRIVE DONATIONS RECEIVED

The Junior School Leadership team would like to thank everyone for their generous and sweet candy donations. We had overflowing boxes of candy to donate, and all boxes were delivered and received by two Covenant House locations, a men’s shelter and detox centre, and the downtown eastside woman’s shelter. There was even enough left to bring to Canuck Place Children's Hospice. A special thank you to Mrs. Carrigan who drove around and delivered the boxes this past weekend.

COURT UPGRADES

Over the summer, the Brockton community worked hard to get lines (basketball, pickleball, and handball) painted on the tennis courts. Earlier this month, we installed 2 brand new adjustable basketball hoops, alongside two permanent outdoor soccer goals.

These are already proving a hit with students using the space during recess, lessons, and after-school!

FRENCH BOOKS DONATION

The Junior School would like to thank Helena (Harcus' mom) for organizing the Usborne Brockton Book Fair. She generously donated 5 new French children’s books to the French PYP department.

As always, we are very grateful for the generosity and dedication to our community. Merci!

OPEN PARACHUTE AS A WELL-BEING PROGRAM AT BROCKTON

Open Parachute is a well-being program for students in Kindergarten to Grade 12 that focuses on social and emotional development. In the Junior School, Open Parachute supplements other programs we currently use, such as Zones of Regulation and GRIT. In the Senior School, our students work through the lessons during their advisory blocks. Open Parachute uses research-based psychological skills-building exercises to support mental health and well-being.

Topics include:

There is also a program to support teachers and parents. Please check out the parent information package for more information. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to our Jamie Morris, Director of Student Services.

WEEKLY WELLNESS

SUPPORTING YOUR TEENS WITH STRESS

This time of year can be stressful for many people, including teens. While everyone deals with stress, supporting your children to develop the proper tools to deal with and manage their stress can help tremendously later on in life.

Strong Minds Strong Kids, Psychology Canada has created resources for parents/caregivers on how to support children to manage stress. Check out their website, or this article for more information on how you can support at home.
