Thank you to everyone who attended the Shelter Tas AGM on Friday 25 November. If you missed it, we elected the new Shelter Tas Executive and Policy Committee for 2022-24 (see below for the latest Committee memberships). Thanks also to our wonderful SPC and Executive members for their commitment and support of Shelter Tas, and we look forward to working with you all over the next year.

Released at the AGM, Our Annual Report provides an excellent overview of our members’ achievements, as well as Shelter Tas work over the past year, and is now available online. Another major piece of work that we recently completed is our annual Submission to the State Government Budget Process for 2023-24, which is an important opportunity to address the chronic shortage of affordable homes and highlight systemic challenges and changes needed in the Tasmanian housing system. The 2022 release of the Rental Affordability Index is now available. The RAI Report is produced by National Shelter and SGS Economics and Planning, and provides an easy-to-understand indicator of rental affordability relative to household incomes, giving Australia-wide results for capital cities and ‘rest of the state’ areas. Since 2018, both Hobart and the Rest of Tasmania have been the least affordable in the country on the measure of rent to income.
In his address to our AGM, the Hon Guy Barnett, Minister for Housing announced $50 000 funding for Shelter Tas in partnership with Hobart Women’s Shelter to provide a report on women’s housing needs. The report will be a key information resource for the twenty-year Tasmanian Housing Strategy. You can read the Minister's media statement here, and we look forward to this new leading analysis.
The new Homes Tasmania statutory body came into operation on 1 December, and we were delighted that the new Chair, Michele Adair found time to meet with Shelter Tas on that very busy day. The first of many productive meetings!

Congratulations to the new Homes Tasmania Board Members
|
|
|
Congratulations to the recently announced Board of Homes Tasmania - Michele Adair (Chair), Tim Gourlay, Daryl Lamb, Robert Pradolin, Alice Spizzo and Ellen Witte.
The selection provides valuable longstanding experience in the Tasmanian housing and homelessness sector, as well as leadership in the areas of governance, property development, data analytics, legal and planning.
We look forward to working with the new Board on delivering the Government's commitment to 10,000 new social and affordable homes by 2032, and on improving housing outcomes for vulnerable Tasmanians.

Housing Dashboard Update - October 2022
|
|
|
The October 2022 Housing Dashboard is currently available at the Communities Tas website.
There are 4,534 households waiting for social housing - an increase of 30 from 4,504 in September.
The time for priority applicants to be housed has increased to 105.6 weeks (monthly figure as of October 2022) from 76.5 in September, and the rolling 12-month average waiting time is 74.0 weeks.

CHIA Report Highlights Unmet Housing Need
|
|
|
The Community Housing Industry Association (CHIA) has released a national snapshot - Quantifying Australia’s unmet housing need - showing one in fifteen Australian households were experiencing homelessness, overcrowded homes or rental stress on census night in 2021.
Taking into account homelessness, overcrowding and lack of affordability for lower income households, the report forecasts significant and growing unmet need unless there are focused housing system interventions, and suggests a need for 6.5% annual growth in non-market housing to meet demand.
Shelter Tas has contributed funding to this important piece of research, prepared for CHIA by the University of New South Wales, and you can read the summary report and related media statement here.

Parity Magazine - Call for Contributions
|
|
|
Parity magazine is the Council to Homeless Persons' national publication, and they are currently seeking contributions for their March 2023 edition - Safe at Home.
This edition will discuss how Safe at Home responses support life outcomes for victim-survivors of family violence, including how principles are put into practice and how this is measured.
All contributions should be submitted as Word documents to parity@chp.org.au. Please contact Parity Editor Noel Murray at parity@chp.org.au or ring 0466 619 582 if you have any questions, and you can read the call for contributions here. Deadline for submissions is COB Monday 10 March 2023.

Essential Community Services Fuel Relief Program for Community Service Organisations
The Tasmanian Government has established the Essential Community Services Fuel Relief Program as a relief package for not-for-profit organisations to help ensure essential support services for Tasmanians in need can continue, uninterrupted.
Under the Program, eligible organisations will receive $20 for every $100 spent on fuel costs for essential community services, with a maximum amount of $1,000 available per applicant. Funding is provided on a first come-first served basis.

International Women's Day Small Grants Program 2023
To celebrate and promote the contribution of Tasmanian women to their communities, the Tasmanian Government is funding grants of up to $2,000 for each application ($20,000 total) to support International Women’s Day (IWD) events run by local organisations across the State.
Organisations can apply for the grant to hold events that:
- support women’s equality, including women’s economic security, leadership and participation, safety, and/or health and wellbeing.
- celebrate and promote the contribution of Tasmanian women to their communities.

2023 Youth Week Tasmania Grants Program
Youth Week Tasmania will be held from Monday 1 May – Sunday 7 May 2023. The theme for Youth Week Tasmania 2023 is Acceptance. The slogan is: Be Bold. Be You.
Grants of up to $2,000 are available to organisations to support Youth Week Tasmania 2023
events, activities, or projects to:
- Showcase the talents and skills of young people;
- Celebrate the contributions of young people in communities, in education and in the workforce; and
- Build the capacity of young people to engage with the broader community and develop practical skills through their involvement in planning and delivering Youth Week Tasmania events or activities.
