TRA2022 Conference Highlights
The Transport Research Arena (TRA) Conference in Lisbon took place from 14-17 November 2022 in Lisbon and gathered more than 2000 participants, 600 speakers and 60 exhibitors!
For the Magellan Circle organising team, it was rewarding to see the results of many months of hard work on all the communication activities for #TRA2022, from the website and branding to videos and social media. ✨
Several EU funded projects which Magellan Circle is involved in also made their debut at the conference. PIONEERS joined the conversation on one of the hot topics of TRA, the sustainability of ports and airports, through presentations at the ALICE & European Commission (EC) booths and speaking on the topic in Strategic Session 3.2.
Our maritime projects LASH FIRE and STEERER were present at the common booth hosted by the Waterborne Technology Platform, while LASH FIRE also had a presentation at the EC booth.
The EALING Project also presented its flagship action on cold ironing in ports at the TRA2022 through a poster and presentation in a scientific session.

Equal Pay Day, Digital Services Act & COP27
Women in the European Union still continue to earn less than men for equal job, with the average gender pay gap in the EU standing at 13%. This means that for every €1 a man earns, a women will make €0.87. Progress is steady, however still too slow, with a 2.8 percentage point gap reduction in 10 years. This year, European Equal Pay Day fell on the 15th of November.
On the 16th of November, a landmark new set of EU rules for a safer and more accountable online environment entered into force with the Digital Services Act (DSA).The DSA applies to all digital services that connect consumers to goods, services, or content. It creates comprehensive new obligations for online platforms to reduce harms and counter risks online, introduces strong protections for users' rights online, and places digital platforms under a unique new transparency and accountability framework.
At the COP27 which ended on the 18th of November in Egypt, the EC showed ambition and flexibility to keep the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees within reach. On mitigation, Parties agreed that limiting global warming to 1.5C requires rapid, deep and sustained reductions in global greenhouse gas emissions, reducing them by 43 percent by 2030 relative to the 2019 level. On loss and damage, the Parties decided to establish new funding arrangements for assisting developing countries that are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change.
