Advent Midweek Worship

Why Advent?

Once, in my home, there was a disagreement about when to begin listening to Christmas music. The Christmas Enthusiast wanted to start playing carols the day after Thanksgiving. The Liturgical Purist scoffed that it wasn’t Christmas for another month, and it should be time for Advent music. Skeptical, the Christmas Enthusiast asked for a list of Advent songs. The Liturgical Purist returned that there was plenty of Advent music to fill the weeks until December 25.

The Christmas Enthusiast said, “Alexa, play Advent music.”

Alexa replied, “Okay, I’ll play a station you might like: Christmas Carols.”

Not to be so easily defeated, the Liturgical Purist created a playlist of seasonally appropriate tunes and named it “Advent Music” for the next time the subject arose. I’ll leave it to you to imagine the look on the face of the Christmas Enthusiast when the next smug request for Alexa to play Advent music resulted in a two-hour playlist starting with “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord.”

Funny, I’ll admit, and more revealing about the personalities of the adults in my home than anything else, perhaps, but the story above invites us to ask the same question that our midweek services, blue paraments, and countdown calendars ask: why Advent? Keep reading...

RLC Cottage Meetings Feedback
More than 50 RLC members participated in conversations about what they love about RLC, what they worry about, and their hopes and dreams for RLC. Those conversations have been collected together into a summary, which can be read at this link. Copies will be available at RLC on Sunday, as well.

As you read, what do you notice? Does anything surprise you? Is there something that you'd like to be part of working on with others who care about it? How do you hear God's voice calling RLC through these words?

Adult Education: Join us this Sunday as we continue to learn about God's work to mend and restore the universe- Manna and Mercy.

Giving statements are available to pick up in the fellowship area.

Advent
This Advent, there is something for everyone at RLC- from Soup Suppers to Advent for Kids & Families to Worship. Check the details below and make a plan to join us for any or all of these great events:

Advent Soup Suppers: On Wednesdays from 11/30 - 12/21, soup is on! Come share in a meal from 5:30-6:30. Free will offerings will support RLC ministries.

Advent for Kids & Families
The story of Advent is about God taking on a physical body like ours. As you wait with anticipation and prepare for baby Jesus to be born this Advent season, we invite you to discover the awesomeness of incarnation and what it means for God to move, act, and live with us. These Bible readings, conversations, activities, and prayers are especially well-suited for preschool through 5th graders, but big kids and grown-ups can also participate.

Together, we’ll explore the ways in which we can claim:

  • Body, have HOPE!

  • Brain, practice PEACE!

  • Self, feel JOY!

  • Heart, feel LOVE!

Advent for Kids & Families will be on Wednesdays from 6:30-6:50 at RLC, November 30- December 21. Come ahead of time to enjoy the soup suppers, stay after for Advent worship, or just stop in for this family faith formation time.

Advent Worship
When the world around us says hustle and bustle and get things done for the holidays, Advent reminds us to rest and be refreshed by God who has already done everything for Christmas.

Come and worship with us at 7pm every Wednesday from 11/30-12/21. These half-hour services include music, scripture, prayer, and time for reflection. Come early to grab a bowl of soup, or just come in time to find a seat for worship. These services will also be streamed live.

A note from Congregational President Carly Montgomery:

Dear Members and Friends of Resurrection Lutheran,

As we celebrate our Advent Season, it is important that we focus our attention on the celebration of Christ’s birth, our greatest gift. I hope that you will make this season special by participating in the many church activities.

Each year, RLC members/friends show our appreciation to our Pastor and staff. I am inviting each of you to participate in this monetary gift as we thank them for their dedication.

Please mail or drop off your gift to the church (mark it as staff gifts). You may also send it to:

Carly Montgomery
110 SW 32nd Court
Ankeny, IA 50023
Checks may be made out to RLC.

Please make your contribution by December 20. Thanks in advance for your contribution.

In Christ,
Carly Montgomery, President
Resurrection Lutheran Church

Christmas Pageant and Music Program
On December 4 comes the musical and theatrical event of the season, featuring actors of all ages and many gifted RLC musicians. Together, they will tell the story of the birth of Jesus in “Looking for Jesus at RLC.” The program begins at 4pm, and will be followed by cookies. The program will also be streamed live online.

Christmas Caroling
The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear. Join us to spread that cheer by caroling for our neighbors at Sunny View, Mill Pond, Rock Creek, and a few other stops on December 10, starting at 2pm. We’ll meet at RLC at 1:45 to pass out music and allow for carpooling if needed. We should be finished no later than 4:30.

Christmas Eve Worship
There will be two Christmas Eve worship services. The first, at 4pm, will include candlelight (both wax and electric candles will be available) and Holy Communion. There will also be a Children's Sermon. The second service, at 7:30pm will include Candlelight & Holy Communion and RLC Choir.

New Year’s Eve/Day Worship
Because New Year’s falls over a weekend, the regular worship schedule will be adjusted to allow for the holiday. There will be one service at 9am on Sunday, January 1, 2023. This will be a “Lessons and Carols” Christmas service. There will be no service on New Year’s Eve.

If you notice a property issue (broken doorknob, burned out lightbulb, etc.), please email property@resurrectionlutheran.org to help keep all maintenance requests together.  Thank you
