Hi <<First Name>>,
Anyone looking for some architectural inspiration for their home, don't miss the beautiful homes on Grand Design House of the Year is on this Wednesday at 9pm Channel 4.

Time has flown by this year, I can't believe it's nearly Christmas.  This time a year ago I was off work with what was to become long covid, andI was unable to share the news of my involvement in the beautiful home House on the Hill, the winning home of RIBA House of the Year 2022.  Here are some photos of the award winning home for you to enjoy.

Folded facade of glass and dark grey cladding frame views out to the landscape. Each piece of cladding needed to be carefully set out.  All glazing details were drawn at 1:5 scale to allow the contractor to get it right. @Paul Riddle

HOUSE ON THE HILL

As part of a great team at Alison Brooks Architects (ABA) I worked on the second phase of this beautiful contemporary home, the bold glass, mirror and dark grey clad extension.  I designed the technical detailing of the project, included the exterior of the home - the crisp, angular glazing junctions with the dark grey cladding and angled green roof, along with parts of the open plan interior.

The roof planes were modelled in 3D cad software to allow the steel work to be accurately set out.  The roof had to be designed to take the weight of the green roof.  The chimney flue is concealed behind the vaulted form. @Paul Riddle

Working on this project was a fantastic opportunity - and the attention to detail that is needed to deliver a beautifully crafted home continues to remain part of my approach in all the projects I work on.  Each project, no matter what scale, requires time to craft the design - the junction of materials, how light enters the spaces - to add so much more than sqm to a home.

The flow of the spaces, framing of views of the landscape and carefully crafted details inside and out make this home special.  It Is also vital that the home you design for your client's respond not only on the location is it set and it's surroundings, but to the unique qualities of the site and the home's owners aspirations and posessions.  At House on the Hill, the home did more than display the many pieces of art work, they became integral to the design.  The stair form of folded steel houses the art within it's structure, the fireplace juts into the room to allow larger works to rest on it, the double height spaces to provide space to see larger pieces and allow light to flood the spaces below.

The changing light through the day is beautiful, changing as you move through the home.  @Paul Riddle

Set overlooking the Severn Estuary in Gloucester, the house layout maximises the views from every room.  By angling the walls and glazing within, each view is different. The extension contrasts the original stone cottage, converted under the first phase of works also by ABA.  To the centre of the plan is a double height void with rooflight over, flooding the kitchen with light.  A carefully detailed stair houses some of the beautiful artwork the owners David and Jennie have collected over the years.

The final stage of the project, which took place after I had left ABA to set up Sophie Bates Architects, is the stone clad pool house framed by and integrated into a walled garden.  Photographs - Paul Riddle

I am looking forward to seeing this year's winner - some beautiful houses to see!
