Atop an Underwood Reading Series at Philly Typewriter

More events keep happening at the shop, and our latest will be a first for us.

Our friend Marshal James Kavanaugh, known the world over as Dream Poet For Hire, will be hosting an event at our storefront location. Join us at Philly Typewriter on Sunday, December 18th at 6pm for the first installment of Atop An Underwood Reading Series.

The night will celebrate 100 years of Jack Kerouac, from which the reading series gets its name, with beat-inspired spoken word and typewriters to create our own original scroll like On The Road. Aspiring beatniks, jazz heads, and general poetry lovers all are welcome.

Come for the featured readers and stay for the open mic. Also please bring your poetry, short stories, personal philosophies, and songs to share. This will be a casual night, with lots of warmth and good fun. A perfect community to try your hands at a typewriter and find your voice in a poem.

Featured readers include:
Quinn Rodriguez
Julian Ortman
+1 TBD

Refreshments will be provided. Bring your friends.[RSVP & more info]

The Future Is Analog:
How to Create a More Human World

Sadly, our book launch event this past month wasn’t able to take place. Author David Sax took unexpectedly ill (he’s recovered and back on the road!) and had to cancel the first few events of his book tour. The revolution marches forward though, and we now have copies of Davids latest book “The Future is Analog”, as well as a restock of his 2016 best seller “Revenge of Analog”. Come by and get your copy today!

The Kravitz Lecture Series at The Parkway Central Library

After many months of planning, and over 45 years of research and experience, Bryan Kravitz is taking Philly Typewriter on the road with a lecture series exploring the history of the typewriter. Over eight months, starting November 30th, Bryan will be giving lectures at the Parkway Central Library. From the mind of Christopher Latham Sholes and the rise of the IBM Selectric to the typewriter’s life at home and in the workplace, registrants will get a deep understanding of the impact of typewriter throughout history, then and now.

These lectures are free but registration is required. Click here to register.

Services in time for Christmas

As the holiday season heads in to full swing, so does the pace at which the shop runs. If you’ve had a machine done with us before, you know we prioritize quality over speed always. With that in mind, starting November 30th, no new restorations will begin until the new year. Depending on the queue, services (these are more commonly portable typewriters) may be done in time for Christmas, but it is highly advised to schedule your consultation as soon as possible to maximize those chances. Call or email today!

Lastly, a thank you…

The first Philly Typewriter Storefront in 2018

The first Philly Typewriter storefront in 2018

November 28th marked our fifth anniversary.

There's actually too much to say. It's honestly just a whirlwind since this little typewriter shop on the corner opened up in a brave new century for a centuries old machine...

Our beginnings were built around love. It is a story saved for our halls, but a story that exploded into a love of the typewriter shared with our city and greater region.

We've expanded, moved, grown and encouraged. We survived a global pandemic, broadened our horizons, and built a space around education and preservation.

If you are reading this, you've helped make it happen. The love that allowed us to blossom, and a love nurtured by our community. We’re looking forward to the next five years.

Thank you.
