“Committed to ending human trafficking and sexual exploitation by raising awareness through the media and grassroots mobilization, education, advocacy and policy.”
WARNING: This newsletter may be disturbing because it’s true.
It’s 2022. Soon 2023. 43 out of 50 states allow
children to get married to adults.
Dear Warrior:
One might think of a child marrying an adult as happening somewhere far away from America. "Over there" somewhere. Some under-developed and economically deprived country. This is the same way most people think about human trafficking in the United States. The Warriors now call both of these human rights abuses human slavery. That is exactly what they are, enslavement.
Most people think these crimes of child abuse are happening elsewhere. That is what I hear. But surely not in our United States. No way. Wake up Warriors. The reality is shocking. Child brides in the United States? How can this be? A child cannot consent. A child cannot hire a lawyer, enter into a legal contract, rent an apartment, drink, smoke, vote and a host of other things until they are legally adults which varies. But mostly the legal age is 18 with exceptions such as 19 in Nebraska and 21 in Mississippi. Shouldn’t children be in school, having fun and enjoying their friends?
T OR F: A minor can legally be married in 43 states. True. This is about human rights and child abuse. It’s happening and escalating every day in the United States.
Let’s Learn More
300,000 children were legally married in the U.S. between 2000 and 2018. Mostly girls to adult men. Minors have limited rights and cannot even file for divorce. Their body is not their own. In any other case, an adult male having sexual relations with a minor girl would be considered statutory rape. The “marriage” is covering up what should be considered a sex crime. Approximately, 60,000 marriages since 2000 occurred at an age or spousal age difference that should have been considered a sex crime. This is what we know about. Imagine the real numbers. Child marriage is a hidden crime hiding in plain sight.
Facts About Child Marriage in the United States
Child Marriageis currently legal in 43 states. Only Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Rhode Island, New York and most recently Massachusetts have set the minimum age at 18 years old.No exceptions. Nine states do not set a minimum marriage age floor and 20 states in the U.S. do not require any minimum age for marriage so long as there's a parental or judicial waiver. And that is the key. That is how these marriages are allowed.
Child Marriageis child abuse. It destroys young girls lives. It often produces horrific and devastating lifelong repercussions, destroying their education and economic opportunities. There are a multitude of health risks including severe psychological damage, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and pregnancies. A girl’s body is not her own. It increases a girl’s risk of experiencing domestic violence. The marriage usually ends in divorce.
Child Marriage: There are too many exceptions to child marriage laws in the United States. There is no federal legislation regarding age of marriage and states have the right to set their own standards, leading to tremendous state-by-state variation. Forty-three states in America continue to allow girls and boys under 18 to wed. Nine states have established no absolute minimum age for marriage. Girls as young as 10 are occasionally married quite legally in the United States.
This cannot be ignored any longer. Ignorance is no defense. And inaction is not an option. It is that simple.

A yearlong investigation by the South Florida Sun Sentinel exposed the complicity of Florida’s child welfare system in underage sex trafficking, through evidence found in government records, state and federal lawsuits, research studies, and interviews with victims and family members. Our child welfare system does not work. Our government needs to re-boot and build correctly from the ground up. ENOUGH abuse of our children. Prayers for Jayden.

Have a Family Safety Emergency Plan in Place. “Children who become separated from their loved ones during and following a disaster are at an increased risk of trauma. Coping with anxiety and stress are much more difficult in the absence of those who know the child’s individual needs. Children separated from their parents or legal guardians are more vulnerable to maltreatment, abuse, abduction, and sexual exploitation.” –NCMEC
