In our first ever ‘long-read’, Rob Davies marks our 10-year anniversary with a look back over the past decade and how we’ve evolved from the early days of the Cohort Resources Facility into CLOSER, the home of longitudinal research.
To coincide with this major milestone, we've created a new infographic illustrating (in numbers) the breadth of our work, resources and impact over the past 10 years.

In the latest of our standardised scales project blog series, Le Phuong Mai Pham reflects on her internship with the CLOSER Discovery team and her work to help facilitate comparative longitudinal research.

Videos and slides from CLOSER's recent webinar introducing the ONS Longitudinal Study and the Longitudinal Study of Young People in England 2 are now available online. Learn more about these studies, what data are collected, how to access the data, and case studies to help inspire your research.
Earlier this month, Prof Emla Fitzsimons highlighted the potential that effective data management presents for innovation and research at an All-Party Health Group and All-Party Parliamentary Group on Data Analytics webinar. Emla spoke about the importance of metadata, standards and governance, the value of data linkage, the need to learn from the experience of longitudinal population studies and participant engagement, and how transparency and communication about how data will be used is key to maintaining public trust.
The CLOSER team had our busiest ever European DDI Conference earlier this month in Paris, hosted by SciencesPo. Hayley Mills, Jon Johnson and Becky Oldroyd organised introductory and demonstrator events on DDI and Archivist (our questionnaire editor), hosted a workshop and discussion on implementing questionnaires in the DDI-Lifecycle standard, and presented the latest in our new project implementing standardised scales.
The conference was attended by 120 participants, from 45 different organisations, and 18 countries. The 2023 conference will be hosted by the Social Science Data Archives, at the University of Ljubljana, in Slovenia.

New CLOSER resources produced this year

|
CLOSER Discovery - our innovative research tool that enables researchers to search, explore and assess data from multiple UK longitudinal population studies - has continued to expand throughout 2022.
Researchers can now explore over 190,000 variables and 49,000 questions from 11 studies, including for the first time, data from the Health and Employment After Fifty (HEAF) Study and the first nine waves of the Wirral Child Health and Development Study.
|
|
We added a new series of 'Getting started' videos to the Learning Hub - our free, online educational resource for those new to longitudinal research. The series provides a step-by-step guide to the learning modules, research case studies and other resources, and how these can benefit your research.
Check out our latest research case study exploring health inequalities and sexual orientation.

Researchers can now download our harmonised dataset of mental health measures from the UK Data Service.
The dataset includes measures of pre-adolescent characteristics: emotional problems, peer problems, behaviour problems, and attention/hyperactivity problems.
The harmonised measures were collected by 1958, 1970, 2000-01 British birth cohorts and the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children.

In January 2022, we brought together over 300 members of the LPS community from around the world to share best practice and identify ways to tackle shared challenges in data linkage, influencing policy, new forms of data collection, participant and public engagement, and the impact of COVID-19.
Our conference report summarises the key points, presentation videos, slides and illustrated summaries all in one place.
