Pastor's Corner: “In the Mood”
I often hear people talk about how they’re ‘in the mood’ to do something…or ‘in the mood’ for some special food…or ‘in the mood to be joyful’ or ‘in the mood to be sad.’ It seems our moods drive so much of what we do and don’t do today. If we’re not careful, we can become dictated more by our moods than by our duty or what is right sometimes. Moods are potent things.
Have you ever wondered what the mood was like before Jesus was born? Sometimes we think it must have been joyful and expectant and angels singing everywhere… but I wonder about that. Joseph and Mary arrived in Bethlehem – things were overrun, and the town was bursting at the seams… all because of a census decree from Emperor Augustus. The mood was probably overwhelming and chaotic for this young couple about to become parents.
From a personal standpoint, there are certain things I have to do each year to really get into the Christmas ‘mood’. I have to watch It’s a Wonderful Life, I have to hear great traditional Christmas music, and I have to experience the season with my brothers and sisters in my church family. Faith, Matthew, and our entire family look forward to sharing these next few weeks with our new Cokesbury family. In that spirit, and to help you, I want to invite you to these special events personally:
- Our CWU Snowflake Luncheon – On Sunday, December 11, from 11:30a – 2:00p at Asbury Place, the luncheon will be a time to eat together, fellowship, and bid on silent auction items. All proceeds go to our Cokesbury Kids, Student Ministries, and other community missions.
- Christmas Sing-a-Long – On Wednesday evening, December 14, from 5:45p – 7:00p in the Sanctuary. Bring the kiddos and the grandkiddos! This will be a great time of church family fellowship, singing our favorite Christmas hymns, and cookies and cocoa.
- Christmas Choir Cantata – On Sunday afternoon at 3:00p in our Sanctuary. I treasure this music every Christmas and can’t wait to hear our choral presentation. Come and join us! You will truly be blessed.
- Christmas Eve Worship – Our Service for Children and Families is at 4:00p in our Sanctuary. This service will have a more casual and contemporary flavor to it. From 5:15p – 6:00p, we will have a Come and Go time for those who wish to come to the Sanctuary, sit quietly and pray, and receive the sacrament of Holy Communion. Then, at 6:30p, we will hold our Traditional Service of Candlelight and Communion.
- On Sunday morning, December 25, we will gather for one worship service only at 10:00a to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior!
I believe that getting in the ‘mood’ for Christmas will be much easier as we celebrate these events together.
Blessings to you,
Pastor Bobby
