We are so thankful for you!

November is the time of year that we take stock of the good things in our lives, and we can’t think of anything better than our fencing family. Your support has helped us all to reach higher and to maximize our potential. It’s an ongoing process, but in the last several weeks, we’ve seen some tremendous accomplishments from our individual fencers and from our collective community.

This month, we’re focused on supporting our fencers as the fencing season and the holiday season start to overlap. It’s a joyful time of year, but it’s also a time for us to think about how we can best manage our time and our energy. Leaning on goodwill and the camaraderie of our fencing community is a way to help us all stay on top of our goals while at the same time enjoying all of the things that we have.

Walking in gratitude helps us all to feel more confident and to be stronger. Right now, we’re taking a moment to look around and give thanks for the coaches, the staff, and the fencing families at AFM who make it all happen.

Our fencers, you are so incredibly talented and tenacious. Whether you are a new fencer who has just joined AFM or one of our athletes who has been with us for many years, know that you are seen and appreciated. We love this sport, and that love is all the stronger because you are here with us!

The essence of Thanksgiving is to be a time that we reflect on what is good in our world. It’s not about the big meal with the turkey in the center of the table - it’s about family and friends who support each other. While there is plenty of hard news out there to go around, we are heartened by the good things that are happening in our lives. Those good things push us to see the possibilities, both in fencing and beyond.

In a couple of weeks when you are gathered around your Thanksgiving tables with your family and friends, please realize that we at AFM will be gathered around our own and giving thanks for our fencing community.
                                                               Sincerely yours,
                                                                                         Irina Chirashnya

The Big Success of the AFM Super Regional Premier

Congratulations to all AFM families, coaches, and volunteers, and, of course, to all our guests and competitors on making history and having the biggest fencing regional tournament in USA Fencing History! Fun numbers:
About 3,000 entries, with guests from other states, Canada, Europe, and even Emirates!
48 fencing events over the three days of competition!
85 referees from all over the USA and Mexico!
53 metal strips and scoring apparatus from Absolute Fencing Gear, with an Olympic-size fencing strip for the finals!

We did it! Thank you all! The rumors say that the new nickname for our event is "California NAC." What a huge compliment, we love this name! Hopefully, we will host and have more such high-level, big-scale fencing tournaments in California and the Bay Area!

Congratulations to all medalists and trophies winners! We will see you next year for the 2023 "California NAC"! :)

Thank you, our Amazing Volunteers!

Dear AFM Families and friends, fencers and their parents, everyone who stepped forward and participated in the preparations, organization, set up, hosting, and disassembly of our first AFM Super Regional!

Words cannot describe how much we appreciate your tremendous support, enthusiasm, and hard work to make this inaugural tournament successful! Without all your efforts, hours of volunteering, positive energy, and willingness to be one team and outstanding force, it all would never happen!

Here are our heroes to whom we owe our big appreciation -

Veronica Wong,  Keith Wong, Puja Maniktala, Xin Zhang,  Yifun Liang,  John Buricea,  Bertrand Mollinier Toublet,  Joel Huston,  Alan Dowdell,  Jen Loftus,  Nick Radov,  Tim Claes,  Kechuan Tu,  Linna Sim,  Ange Mollinier,  Nathan Liu, Bernice Matusow, Svetlana Donets, Jenn Liu,  Yaofeng Xu, Chris Lomio, Bing Cai,  Cindy Blanco, Lakshmi Namboori,  Sheri Wang, The amazing Le family - Luan Le, Leanne Le, Luana Le, An Dao,  Samantha Teachworth,  Linna Sim,  Helen Xu, Kevin Ye,  Heidi Ding, Lian Jian,  Michelle Burling,  Nisha Padhi, Abhinav Khushraj,  Srikanth Krishnamohan, Linda Chen,  Peining Chang,  Robert Lau,  John Buricea,  Nathan Liu, Grace Guo,  Christine Huo,

Some of these special people spent not only hours helping out but a few days in the tournament and the setup and disassembly!

We especially thank from the bottom of our hearts Puja Maniktala from the Silicon Valley Fencing Center for taking a day off from her work for the setup, for coming and volunteering, and for offering even more time and support!

We very much appreciate Xin Zhang, mom of Allan and Audrey Chu, for her willingness to be there, improve, create, and support for the whole five days of work with the setup and disassembly! Thank you, Xin!

Special thanks are going to the AFM parents who worked so hard to set up the strips! This is physically demanding work, it was heavy and difficult, and we thank you for this hard work so much!

Veronica Wong,  Yifun Liang,  John Buricea,  Bertrand Mollinier Toublet,  Joel Huston,  Jen Loftus,  Alan Dowdell, Xin Zhang,  Nick Radov, Yifun Liang, Rich Caetano, and all volunteers who stepped forward for the urgent unplanned installation on Friday! Thank you!

Big thanks to Alan Dowdell for his great photography made during the competition, for working whenever we needed help, and for all three days' support! Thank you! As Alan was with the photo camera, he did not take a photo of himself:)

Together we hosted the best-ever regional fencing event in the USA Fencing history - HUGE THANKS, YOU ARE THE BEST! The phenomenal success of the AFM Super Regional is a reflection of AFM teamwork and our desire to bring to our community great tournament opportunities.  Thank you, volunteers, for your amazing generosity and dedication. Your generosity is seemingly endless. Thank you for your amazing generosity.

AFM CUPS

We had some wonderfully engaged and encouraging participation in the first AFM Cup of the season last month, so thank you so much to everyone who came out! However, keep in mind that this not an isolated tournament - this a series!

The next AFM Cup tournament will take place on December 18th in Sunnyvale! This tournament is for youth fencers at the Y8, Y10, Y12, and Y14 level.

This is the second in our series of four tournaments in the AFM Youth Cup, with two remaining competitions in April and June. It’s a perfect way for our own fencers to compete at an internal competition. There are three further competitions in the AFM Cup series -  Fencers who are new to competition as well as those who have a lot of experience will both get a lot out of the AFM Cup. This is a great way to practice at the lower levels and to build momentum.

These competitions build on one another across the competitions, so the more AFM Cup tournaments you compete in, the better your chance to win those big prizes at the end. It’s a valuable experience no matter the outcome. These tournaments are structured to provide the best benefit for young fencers who are working their way towards more intense competitive experiences.

These tournaments give fencers a friendly, supportive experience to help them grown in the sport. It’s a perfect early competitive fencing opportunity, but it’s also great for competitive fencers who want to keep pushing themselves.

Holidays Closures in November and December

In the coming weeks, AFM will have several closures for the holiday season.

Our offices will be closed, and all classes and lessons will be canceled on the following dates:

  • November 24-25, 2022 – Thanksgiving (Saturday, November 26th, we are open)

  • December 24, 26, 2022 - Christmas

  • December 31, 2022, and January 2, 2023 – New Year’s Eve and Day

Note that we are open for the week between Christmas and New Years, even though school is out! Though there is a lot of (needed) vacation time happening in these weeks, this is also a prime opportunity to get some additional training in. Private lessons and open fencing are perfect places to get a little boost before the season starts getting more intense in the spring.

Happy holidays!

AFM Everywhere Photo Contest

  • Take AFM to the zoo, the movies, a ski resort, the ocean, on a hike, or anywhere that you’re out adventuring!

  • Share your posts on Instagram and Facebook and tag AFM, including the hashtag #afmeverywhere in your post.

This social media contest is an opportunity for you to share your love of fencing and to show that fencers are indeed everywhere. Though we spend a lot of time together in the club and at competitions, we’re also people out in the world having adventures outside of fencing.

You can show off your AFM logo anywhere you might be. Playing with your pets, at holiday feasts, or traveling over the break. Wherever you are, we want to see your unique voice, because this is what you bring to our fencing community.

Unleash your creativity! We can’t wait to see where you’re headed.

USA Fencing National Poster Design Challenge

We know that fencers are multitalented, incredible individuals who can do just about everything, and now USA Fencing is asking fencers to showcase those skills.

This year, USA Fencing is putting out the call for fencers to create compelling visual imagery for posters that will be displayed at national competitions and offered to clubs across the country. They’re looking for a wide variety of topics, ranging from environmental justice to mental health awareness to education about fencing. The broad range of subjects means that you can follow your ideas and engage with passions that you might have outside of fencing!

Here’s the full list, but the competition encourages you to think outside the box:

  • Anti-Discrimination (posters that fight against ageism, sexism, racism, ableism, homophobia, classism, weight, or other ways that people might discriminate)

  • Fencing is for ALL (posters that promote unity and/or inclusion)

  • Anti-sexual harrassment

  • Anti-emotional abuse

  • Mental health awareness

  • Environmental justice

  • Fencing for people with disabilities (including but not exclusive to parafencing)

  • How to qualify for national or international events

  • Why someone should try fencing

  • Explaining the basic rules of fencing

Applicants must be 13 years or older. You can either enter individually, or you can join with a couple of friends to form a group entry of up to three people.

USA Fencing has created a committee of people from the organization to vote on the winners.  The top five will be posted at national tournaments this season, and the winner will receive a year of competitive membership in USA Fencing.

We highly encourage everyone to be creative and submit!

The deadline for poster submissions is December 23rd, 2022, and you can submit to the following link! https://www.usafencing.org/news_article/show/1245146

The most important thing for us is the safety of our students. This extends both to fencing itself and to pandemic safety.

At the beginning of each season, we start classes with full reminders of our safety policies. Fencing is an extremely safe sport with very low rates of injury, but this low rate is because we are so consistent in our vigilance about safe practices.

Parents, we appreciate your help keeping your kids in touch with what the rules are. After the time of training at home so much through the pandemic, fencers became accustomed to having their weapons at home. The safety precautions in the club are an extension, and we can never reinforce these practices too much.

Here are two of our articles that will help you to check if your child completely understands all AFM safety rules (especially for the younger kids):

1.Important Fencing Safety Rules

2. Fencing Safety Rules [Infographic]

Again, thank you so much for your help and consistency! Your children’s safety is the gateway that allows them to learn and grow through fencing.
