'The artistry needed to make an audience of young and old people laugh is difficult to intellectualise. It is, however, a craft, and one that has endured for hundreds of years'.

Hello Friends!

As winter is upon us and its wet and chilly outside, we thought we'd pop into your inbox with a couple of things to bring some cheer during these dark evenings!

UPCOMING EVENTS
Dates for your diary

IN PERSON MEET UP- Saturday 26th November 2022, at Lanternhouse in Cumbernauld

The afternoon session will be held in the Dance Studio at Lanternhouse (2pm - 6pm). It will take the form of a workshop, looking at career paths (or current lack thereof!) as a theatre director working in Scotland.

There will then be an opportunity to meet with senior staff from Lanternhouse and ask questions. Lanternhouse are keen to promote their innovative programming model, which offers freelance directors opportunities to respond to open call-outs for their in-house productions throughout the year.  https://lanternhousearts.org/open-submissions/

In the evening, there will be an opportunity to watch the first preview of Lanternhouse’s Christmas show, a new version of Treasure Island, written by Ross MacKay and directed by Jordan Blackwood. TDS members will be able to access concession rate tickets for the show, priced at £8. Please use the code TDS at the checkout to access the discount, when booking. https://lanternhousearts.org/events/treasure-island-preview/

Please note:

  • Attendance for the full afternoon and evening is not mandatory, if you only want / are able to attend part of the event, please just do what works for you.
  • If you have any access questions or concerns, please contact the TDS committee by replying to this email
  • Lanternhouse bar does not have an extensive food menu at the weekend (hot dogs and nachos) but there are a number of food outlets nearby, or attendees are welcome to bring their own food into the Dance Studio.
  • If you are travelling by train, please do consider any industrial action that might affect your journey

Committee members (and possibly other members) will be driving from Edinburgh and Glasgow, so lift sharing will be an option for some members that don’t have access to a car, as Cumbernauld can be a bit more difficult to navigate without one. If you would like to attend and either offer space in your car OR request a lift, let us know asap. Joe Douglas (TDS Chair) will organise the lift-sharing options in the week leading up to the event.

You can see instructions on how to get to Lanternhouse here: https://lanternhousearts.org/your-visit/

If you have friends and colleagues who are not TDS members but who you think might benefit by attending the event or perhaps becoming a member, please do make them aware of it and ask them to confirm attendance by emailing us on directorsscotland@gmail.com

OPPORTUNITIES
THE TRON - Assistant Director Bursary
Tron Theatre Company will be staging a mainstage production in March 2023 with rehearsals
running throughout February.

The production will have a very experienced creative team together with a very strong cast. It will be directed by the Tron’s Artistic Director, Andy Arnold.

This is mainly an observational role in the rehearsal room as well as attending creative discussions and production meetings and technical rehearsals. As such, this is not a full-time position. Rather, we are offering a bursary of £2000 to be worked over approximately five weeks of rehearsals and production week together with some pre rehearsal creative meetings and post show reflections.
The number of days each week during the process will be agreed with the director.
This role will provide the opportunity to observe and support the Director in rehearsals and technical rehearsals as well as experience the aspects of the rehearsal process: work on the text and staging of the piece, the etiquette of the rehearsal room, the relationships and discussions between the artistic team, the performers, stage management and crew.

Rehearsals start week beginning 30th January 2023.

We are seeking applications from newly graduated and/or early career directors based in Scotland who wish to gain experience in the processes of staging a mainstage professional theatre
production.

Applicants must demonstrate a proven commitment to becoming a working theatre director.
Applicants for this bursary should send a letter of application together with a full CV. The letter
should indicate what steps to date the applicant has taken in starting a career as a theatre director as well as what type of theatre they want to make and what type of theatre interests them.

Applications will be treated in strictest confidence and should be emailed to
alice.sufferin@tron.co.uk

Closing date for applications is Tuesday 6 th December at 12pm and interviews with shortlisted candidates will be during the following week.

Be Part of Quarrymen’s Arts Centre, 2023 Spring and Summer season.
Quarrymen's Arts Centre have been in touch, they are open to straight hires and box office splits depending on dates/number of shows, particularly around Easter time.

The main space has raked seats which are retractable and seats up to 80 depending on the seating configuration. Some days/weeks the spaces are fully available, but Tuesday’s and Thursday evenings are busy, as we are the home of our local Silver Band. Technical set up is still in flux and so the space would currently suit simpler shows with minimal set or comedy etc.
They are particularly interested in children’s shows and pieces with music.

The performance space and green room are also available to hire during the day, for rehearsals, workshops or meetings.
