Peering into the Invisible Present
Paul Constance for the Long Now Foundation

Human attention spans are notoriously short—and as a result, humans are tuned to miss long-term trends or over-stress the importance of short-term changes. But long-term research projects, such as the LTER, and the multi-decadal time series data they produce are helping researchers understand these long-term changes.

This article, originally published at longnow.org, highlights how the LTER has been at the forefront of long-term scientific thinking for decades. Read more>>
Do Fish Graze the Way for Coral Recovery?
Gabriel De La Rosa

A new analysis of Moorea Coral Reef LTER data shows that grazing has an insignificant effect on coral reef recovery after disturbance. The work shows that results from small scale grazing experiments are complicated ecosystem scale. Read more >>
DataBits Through The Years
Mary Marek-Spartz & Hsunyi Hsieh

The premier issue of DataBits was published in 1989 to disseminate data management news between data managers, PIs, and the broader LTER community. Over 30 years later, data managers Hsunyi Hsieh (KBS) and Mary Marek-Spartz (MSP) take a look back at “vintage” DataBits articles, highlight their main topics, and provide retrospective commentary on the major developments in the LTER IM network over the years. Tweets of the Month

What does it all mean, to each and every one of us? Two examples this month: kids express what Alaskan biodiversity means to them through wonderful art pieces facilitated, in part, by the NGA LTER.

And a different kind of tribute: an academic review of the work of CAP LTER's Nancy Grimm, who's continued to lead the LTER towards better urban ecological understanding for decades.

Always good to reflect before the holidays.
