Mandatory Child Safe Awareness Training

One of the ways we can support child safety in our organisation and communities is by equipping our members with the knowledge, skills, and awareness to keep children safe.

The SLST Board has determined that all volunteers holding a child/youth facing position are required to complete SLSA’s online Child Safe Awareness course before 31 December 2022.

This includes positions such as:

Officers on surf life saving club or volunteer marine rescue unit committees

Patrol Captains and Vice Patrol Captains

Junior Activity Chairs and Age Managers

Surf Sports Coaches and Officials

Trainers, Assessors and Facilitators

MPIOs and Complaints Managers

Committee members (that have YAWG representatives on them)

Water Safety

Event Management (e.g. Lifesaving Development Camp Leaders)

Canteen volunteers

First Aid personnel

The online module takes just 15-20 minutes to complete and provides a basic introduction to child safety in SLS, including the types and signs of abuse, creating a safe environment and when and how to report.

You will find the course in the SLS – Safety and Wellbeing section of the SLS Members Area

Changes to Water Safety Risk Assessment

The Water Safety App has been discontinues by Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) and the features have been build into the SLSA Operations App.

The guide is designed to assist with accessing the app and compliments the online learning requirement for Surf Risk Rating.

It is important to note that there is currently being a delay experienced from when members complete the online module, to gaining access to the feature within the Operations App. The SLSA IT team are working with developers to resolve this

ATTENTION Junior Activities Coordinators - Take 3 for the Sea Resources

Is your club looking for ways to be more sustainable and have a positive impact on the environment? Take3 for the Sea SLSC Program gives clubs the tools to positively influence their nippers via activities and targeted resources. Take 3 is a non-profit organisation leading action on protecting oceans, with a mission to reduce global plastic pollution through education that inspires action.

There are so many reasons why surf clubs should partner with the Take 3 SLSC program, but here are three key reasons:

  1. Surf clubs sit on the front line of the plastic pollution issue. Using the take 3 program is a very easy way to ensure that your surf club is taking action on this environmental issue. It also shows the community that you care and are being proactive about plastic pollution and protecting our beaches.

  2. The program is perfectly designed to be run by young people within the surf club. Surf clubs are filled with young, passionate environmentalists, and having them lead programs like this is a great way to keep them involved. It is also a great way for them to show initiative and leadership within the club.

  3. When the weather is bad at nippers, you can use the program's resources and activities to teach age groups all about plastic pollution and the importance of protecting our oceans.

Beach to Bush - Update

SLST’s Beach to Bush program has finished in the south for another year. We have had brilliant feedback so far and our presenters have been doing a fabulous job at delivering the water safety message to so many of Tasmania’s young people. Beach to Bush is an invaluable program and just one way that SLST is working to reduce incidents in coastal and inland waterway environments.

Regional IRB Assessment

It may have been a rainy day at Penguin SLSC earlier this month, but that didn’t deter our Silver Medallion IRB Driver and IRB Crew candidates who participated in the regional IRB assessment on the 13th November.

The day saw clubs across the North West coast come together to increase lifesaving capabilities.

A big thank you to our trainers and assessors, and congratulations to our new drivers and crews.
