Dear Readers,
Tennesseans for Historical Justice (THJ) was created in 2018 in response to the felt need to coordinate growing statewide efforts at identifying instances of racial violence and attempts to achieve conciliation.
The Tennessee Assembly added an impetus to that work with the adoption of PC 966 of the Public Acts of 2018.

While urging action, the Legislature provided no funding.  Since incorporation as a 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation, the THU has existed as an all-volunteer Board of Directors, with no paid staff and only occasional consultants.  During this time, THJ had achieved the following:
  • presented education through our online and public speaking events
  • advocated on relevant issues like the removal of the Nathan Bedford Forrest statue from the State Capitol
  • developed an interactive map locating instances of lynching and other racial violence
  • coordinated statewide Zoom meetings
  • created a website and regular newsletters
  • created and distributed a brochure
  • networked with and supported other relevant organizations
THJ has attempted to raise funding to increase outreach and educational opportunities and to employ staff needed to expand our work.  The fundraising landscape is formidable with so many worthwhile organizations seeking support for needed missions.  With only board  members to make this effort, we have been only marginally successful.  Having a statewide mission versus a local community orientation increases difficulty.

THJ has an excellent, experienced, talented, and dedicated Board of Directors, however, it is a board of only seven volunteer members.  Each of our board members has significant other, though typically related, responsibilities.  This has meant that all of our efforts have been very difficult.

In order to move forward in our mission, THJ needs additional board members who can and will commit to working to accomplish our mission.  THJ also needs financial support to expand our mission focused work.  Many small individual contributions can make a huge difference.  Help obtaining grants, corporate support, etc. can likewise allow THJ to reach our potential and bring real progress to Tennesseans knowledge and commitment.

If you would like to join our volunteer board, please click here to fill out an form of intent.  You may also submit a letter of interest and a resume or other statement of skills and experience to David Yoder.

If you are able to contribute financially, please make a tax deductible contribution to Tennesseans for Historical Justice through our website.

If you are able to open a door, make an introduction, offer advice, or help in any other way with funding, please contact David Yoder.

Thank you for your consideration and ongoing support.
