Ensuring strong starts and promising futures, in school and the community.
MONTHLY UPDATE
NOVEMBER 2022
From Our Directors

We have much to be thankful for as we continue to make progress on the "Promise" pipeline of initiatives for engaging and supporting the children, youth, and families of Grand Rapids' southeast neighborhoods.

  • Our neighborhood partner Baxter Community Center hosted the October Partner Leadership meeting, giving all members a first-hand glimpse into their programs and facilities.

  • All of our neighborhood partners are making tremendous progress, as you will see in their quarterly progress reports linked below.

  • Our Design and Implementation (D+I)  Teams continue to meet monthly to operationalize the GRSEPN pipeline of initiatives.

  • Facilitators and school renewal specialists are working with principals and teachers weekly in the 14 Promise Neighborhood (PN) schools. This work focuses on supporting each school in achieving high priority targets for student success and preparing school leadership teams to implement and sustain PN Grant initiatives.

  • Our evaluation/data team at Grand Valley State University recently submitted our GRSEPN data plan to the Promise Neighborhood program officers at the US Department of Education. This plan provides a baseline and growth targets for each of ten Federal progress indicators and measures.

  • Our management team continues to learn from other Promise Neighborhoods across the United States via webinars sponsored by the PN program.

Our story continues to grow and develop and we thank our partners and contributors for their tremendous efforts. Every week, we learn new ways to leverage the great work already in progress, build upon the strengths of existing programs and services, and explore ways to enhance those programs and services with high impact practices and strategies.

In December, we will participate in the 12th Annual Promise Neighborhoods National Conference where we will engage with and learn from experts in each of the PN Grant areas of focus and with PN Projects from all over the U.S. GRSEPN partners will also start receiving recommendations from the D+I Teams to inform their work plans for 2023.

Sincerely,

–Patricia Reeves, Jianping Shen, Bridget Cheney, and Candace Cowling  GRSEPN Co-Directors

Design + Implementation Teams Continue to SOAR

By Tricia Mathes & Sherrie Ross, D & I Team Leaders
Design + Implementation (D+I) Team Directors continued to engage with each team, holding meetings November 1, 2, and 3 at Alger Middle School. We are excited to continue collaboration with such incredibly passionate teams!

During our November meetings, teams continued to work through the SOAR process, reviewing previously identified strengths and opportunities. Team members then discussed potential aspirations for each opportunity. During our upcoming December D+I meetings, we will review data related to the Promise Neighborhood Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) indicators. Additionally, we will begin examining possible results as we navigate through the final phases of the SOAR process. Team discussions will center around the following questions:
  • Considering our strengths, opportunities, and aspirations, what meaningful measures would indicate that we are achieving our goals?
  • What are 3–5 Indicators for a dashboard that could help monitor progress in real time?
  • What resources are needed to implement our chosen strategies?
  • What are the best ways to celebrate and support implementation?

Upcoming meetings

See each D+I team section below for the next meeting dates. All meetings will be held at Alger Middle School, 921 Alger St SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49507 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. Park directly to the west of the school’s main entrance.

STORIES FROM THE FIELD

Results from teacher surveys conducted with High Impact Leadership Project Cohort B schools last spring show an impressive impact on the leadership conditions in the schools. Increases in leadership conditions are strongly predictive of increased student achievement, and researchers at Western Michigan University are currently in the process of analyzing the 2022 student achievement data. Learn more about the survey instruments and results and click the link below to view teacher interviews from our summer celebration. In the meantime, hats off to all the GRPS schools who participated in this project.

Baxter Child Development Center celebrated Michigan Apple Crunch Day on October 17 with apple juice that our preschoolers made themselves with locally grown apples, juicy Michigan apples for parents and caregivers at drop-off in the morning, and homemade apple crisp at snack time. This was a great way to encourage healthy eating habits in our youngest neighbors, and engage students with hands-on learning opportunities.
