Greenest Region Compact Coalition is Grateful to Roselle Village Board

November 29, 2022Roselle, IL—On Monday, November 28, the Roselle Village Board unanimously endorsed the Greenest Region Compact (GRC) through municipal resolution.  A coalition that included the League of Women Voters of Roselle-Bloomingdale, Green Roselle, and members of the Lake Park High School Earth Club advocated for the resolution through informational presentations, public comments, and attendance at village board meetings.

With this resolution, Roselle joins 142 other Chicagoland municipalities that leverage the strength of local governments to collaboratively build vibrant, sustainable communities.  It is the largest regional sustainability collaborative for municipalities in the country. The GRC is a framework of 49 high-level choices that fall into ten sustainability categories including: climate, economic development, energy, land, leadership, mobility, municipal operations, sustainable communities, water, and waste & recycling.  These choices are aligned with local, regional, national, and international sustainability goals--and were developed through consensus input from members of the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus. The GRC goals are intended to guide municipal action and foster collaboration resulting in positive impacts on sustainability in the region.

One of the most powerful public goods a government can provide is environmental sustainability.  Sustainability is defined as meeting the needs of the current generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet those same needs.  Our Roselle Trustees deserve our thanks.  You can email them at the Village Board website or better yet, attend a village board meeting and thank them in person. Members of the coalition, led by Green Roselle, reviewed the GRC framework and intend to volunteer their time to help the village advance and achieve its sustainability plans.  If you’re passionate about the environment, the League, Green Roselle, and the LPHS Earth Club invite you to join us.

The League of Women Voters of the United States believes natural resources should be managed as interrelated parts of life-supporting ecosystems. Resources should be conserved and protected to assure their future availability. Pollution of these resources should be controlled in order to preserve the physical, chemical, and biological integrity of ecosystems as well as to protect public health.
