For the younger children, ages 0 through kindergarten, the Nursery opens from 10 a.m. to 11:30 each Sunday in the white house.

Children in 1st through 5th grades and Young Friends worship with their families (and all of us) from 10 to 10:20 and then go to their classes with their teachers. 

We are still looking for one paid worker and one more volunteer for the Nursery.  Here is the job description for the paid position.  

Thanksgiving Dinner at the Meetinghouse

Will Kastens is hosting a Thanksgiving potluck dinner in the AFM social hall, 6:30 to 8:30 pm Thursday, November 24.  Everyone is welcome whether you bring a dish or just yourself.  Vegan tofurkey roast provided.  Looking for someone who can provide some turkey or ham. Thanksgiving Address

Thanksgiving is a complicated holiday -- a gathering of family and friends to celebrate the harvest (for those of us descended from colonists) and a day to memorialize the arrival of the colonists and colonization, for those of us who are descended from the people who were already here. And perhaps for descendants of those who arrived here in slave ships to serve the purposes of colonization.  

But thanksgiving can be a healing practice at all times of the year, as it grounds in a reality beyond ourselves.  Many of the Indigenous nations share a practice of giving thanks throughout the year for the earth we live on and all its creatures.  Celebrations, events, and even business meetings often begin with the Thanksgiving Address, addressing and thanking each of the gifts of creation. 

In Braiding Sweetgrass, Robin Wall Kimmerer devotes a chapter of her book to a recitation of the Thanksgiving Address by the small third grade class of the Onondaga school near her home in upstate New York. This 8-minute blessing grounds the reader in a quiet celebration of all that surrounds us and supports our lives.

Next "First" Friday Film Discussion - on December 9

December 9 will be the "honorary first Friday" for our discussion of the film Gather at 7 pm. This film is an intimate portrait of a growing movement among Indigenous Americans to reclaim their spiritual and cultural identities by re-asserting sovereignty over their ancestral food systems, and battling against the historical trauma brought on by centuries of genocide. "Gather" is available on Hoopla (Montgomery County Public Libraries), Kanopy (Prince Georges County and DC Public Libraries), Netflix, I-Tunes, Amazon Prime ($4) and others.  See the trailer here.

Application Season Underway

The children and parents of the Afghan family - the Lodins -  our meeting supports are in need of warmer jackets, hats, gloves, and even boots.  The sizes range is from 4T to adult medium.  If you have something to offer that is in very good condition, please email or call Marcy Seitel, via contact info in Breeze. 

Got Coffee? 

Please bring your coffee grounds and eggshells to the meetinghouse on any Sunday* for Ruby Steigerwald's ongoing compost project. She will collect them from you after meeting, or you can leave them on the lost and found table downstairs in the fellowship hall. (*Please don't bring anything on Sunday, December 4 - Ruby won't be able to collect them that week.)
