Parent Teacher Conferences- Thank you!

This past week marked our return to in-person parent teacher conferences. We were very pleased to welcome everyone back to the building and to discuss your children and their learning. Thank you for partnering with us by attending conferences and sharing your insight. Together we can ensure your child has a wonderful school year!

Additionally, thank you to our generous PTO for providing meals for staff during our conference night and day. It was such a special treat and everyone appreciated the wonderful food.

Winter Weather Update

Now that winter weather has officially arrived, please know that we will go outside for recess everyday if the temperature with the windchill is above zero. It is critical that students are dressed appropriately for them to stay safe in these low temperatures. Additionally, all K-5 students wanting to play in the snow must wear snow pants, boots, hats and gloves. Any child without proper winter attire will be limited to a designated snow-plowed area.

Elm School Spelling Bee

This year, The Elm School Scripps Spelling Bee will be in person and third through fifth grade students will have the opportunity to participate. On Friday, January 6, written spelling bees will be conducted in each third, fourth and fifth grade classroom.

The top two students from each classroom will have the opportunity to participate in the Elm School spelling bee held in person on Wednesday, January 11 after school. More information regarding the Elm School spelling bee will be shared with the classroom bee winners after the in class spelling bee.

The two overall students with the highest scores from the Elm School spelling bee will move on to compete at the District 181 spelling bee. More information will be provided to the school bee winners after the school bee is complete. Please use the study lists below to practice for the bees.

Notification of Advance Absence

The school calendar is established in advance. While we realize the value of family time, the planning of vacations while school is in session is strongly discouraged. In the event that students will be absent from school due to vacation, parents must complete the absence notification form and return it to school before the absence. Assignments, including completion dates, will be given after the absence, as determined by the teacher. Thank you for your cooperation.

Inclement Weather Plan

At the past board meeting, the inclement weather plan was adopted and approved by the Board of Education. Our goal is always to keep schools open; however, there may be days when the weather is so severe that we cannot ensure the safety of our students and staff. This year instead of a traditional “snow day” where school is canceled, inclement weather days may lead to remote learning days for all students. This would allow students to continue learning and eliminate the need to make up missed days at the end of the year.

  • The day will consist of live virtual instruction and asynchronous/independent work

  • The focus of live instruction will be in literacy and math

  • Staff will host office hours to answer questions

  • Art, stem, music and PE lessons will be asynchronous/independent work

  • Pull-out services, reading specialist services and differentiated instruction services may be held during the asynchronous work portion of the day

  • Asynchronous independent work will be completed using either SeeSaw or Google Classroom depending on the grade level

  • Information and links will be shared with families from the classroom teacher
