When I became the Features Editor in 2010 the contest sort of fell into my lap, which meant it was my job to collect all the recipes, procure all the prizes, find the judges to taste the entries and keep the contestants entertained here in the office while the contest was held. Back then there were just 10 contestants each year and the contest was just for cookies. Boy, how things have changed. Now it’s held at the Southport Community Building and we have live music and tables set up (so you can sit and enjoy cookies that four nonprofits have been kind enough to contribute), have some cider, and spend a little time together. When the contest started around 30 years ago I don't think anyone had any idea it would one day be the community event it has become, but it has and we couldn’t be happier about it. It really is a good time and I hope if you’re around here that you can stop by: it’s from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7. We also welcome anyone who wants to participate to send their recipe by the end of day Dec. 2 to cookies@stateportpilot.com to sign up – that’s all you have to do. One GOOD cookieWhat started out in the 1980s as a way to share a few holiday cookie recipes with State Port Pilot readers has evolved into a fun-filled, festive holiday tradition that people of all ages look forward to attending each December. In the beginning, the annual State Port Pilot Cookie Contest drew about 10 recipe entries to the newspaper office. Today, dozens of local bakers will try their sweet hand at being judged the top cookie-maker in the area. As our community has grown, so has the annual cookie contest. Eight years ago, the contest moved from the State Port Pilot office to become part of the official Southport Winterfest celebration. The contest found a new setting as a holiday event inside the Southport Community Building and is now open to anyone who loves cookies, young and old alike. This year’s contest is back at the Community Building on Wednesday, Dec. 7, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. While the submissions are officially judged on taste and texture for the “Best Cookie” contest by three mystery judges, the public gets to vote for “Best Display” to determine who will be honored for best holiday-themed presentation from an impressive collection inside the Community Building. Hundreds of people of all ages who pass through the doors receive a ballot to vote on “Best Display” but they also get to sample or take home cookies baked by several nonprofits who participate in the event. Entering the contest is as easy as pie: just email your recipe and contact information to cookies@stateportpilot.com or drop it off at The Pilot office at 114 East Moore Street, Southport, by 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3. November 27 - Turtle Adoption Day: This is a day of action for the protection of endangered reptiles, most especially the wellbeing of turtles. November 28 - National French Toast Day: No need to wonder about what to make for breakfast on November 28. You know — that thick, sweet, savory dish that’s become a staple of the American breakfast diet. November 29 - National Day of Giving takes place on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. It is created to unleash the power of radical generosity by giving to those in need or charities. November 30 - National Computer Security Day: Cyber security affects everything from where we bank and how we spend our money to who we elect to public office. Remember MyDoom, the worst email virus in history, which caused $38.5 billion in damage, so let’s get educated on staying safe online! December 1 - National Eat a Red Apple Day: National Eat a Red Apple Day encourages everyone to eat a red apple. As the adage goes, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” and today is a perfect time to put that theory to taste. An apple is both delicious and nutritious. The theme for this week was sea shells. Those ubiquitous and strangely beautiful objects inspired some interesting submissions from GOOD readers. Nick Noble captured a lovely shot of the Oak Island seashore while Kilgore Trout snapped a shot of the oyster shells embedded in Southport’s I AM Street. Two sand dollar varieties made appearances – Terry Pope’s keyhole sand dollar and Marisa Bundrick’s sea biscuit paper weight, atop a certain noteworthy publication (thanks Marisa).
