Off-Street Parking Program returns to Town of Newmarket this winter
Program provides residents option to use select municipal lots for free, by permit
Newmarket, ON, November 23, 2022 – The Town of Newmarket’s Off-Street Parking Program will return from now to April 15, 2023. The program allows residents to park in select municipal lots overnight between the hours of 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. with a zero-cost permit, while winter parking restrictions are in effect.

“This was an innovative solution to a need that was created during the pandemic with more people, and vehicles, being home,” says Mayor John Taylor. “It’s now a permanent option each winter as a way to offer continued flexibility. I encourage residents to take advantage of these parking options so that we can keep the streets clear and provide safe snow removal during the winter months.”

All residents will be eligible to apply for and obtain a temporary parking exemption permit through the Town’s online parking portal by providing their vehicle information. Residents will be permitted to park in designated spots in one of four parking lots, including:
  • Municipal Offices (395 Mulock Drive)
  • Magna Centre (800 Mulock Drive)
  • Ray Twinney Recreation Complex (100 Eagle Street)
  • Downtown Newmarket – P3 Parking Lot (Doug Duncan Drive)
All permits will be issued electronically and without the need to print or place a hard copy permit within vehicles. Once registered, residents will receive important details about the rules and regulations for parking within Town-owned lots, including that vehicles must be relocated by 7 a.m. each morning to allow for safe snow removal.

Residents should consider this option when they have overnight guests, are hosting parties and need a safe space for guests to leave their vehicle overnight if they are having a few drinks, or to leave a vehicle downtown after a special dinner on Main Street.

Providing overnight parking in a designated municipal lot offers flexibility for residents while the Town’s winter parking restrictions are in effect. From November 1 to April 15, no vehicle(s) are to be parked on any roadway between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. to avoid interfering with snow clearing, regardless of whether there is snow on the ground.

The Off-Street Parking Program was launched as a pilot program in 2020 in response to demand created as a result of the pandemic. During the pilot, which ran from December 23, 2020 to April 15, 2021, nearly 100 permits were issued. That number increased the following year to 536. The Town aims to increase usage and encourages residents to take advantage of the extra parking spaces when hosting friends and family during the holiday season.
