November 2022 Alumni Newsletter

November 12th and 13th, the Cadets raised money and gifts for the Marine’s Toys for Tots drive. The drive was part of their service learning project. All seniors in NC must complete at least 30 hours of community service in order to graduate. Every year, 1SG McCullough and the JROTC staff provide opportunities for the Cadets to meet their goals. The senior Cadets worked both Saturday and Sunday. The rest of the Corps were scheduled for one four hour shift over the weekend. The Cadets were grouped together at different locations around Oak Ridge. Adult volunteers including parents were with the Cadets to support their efforts. We are grateful for the support for the Cadets and the Academy.

Greensboro Veterans’ Day Parade

Saturday November 5, 2022 the 171st Corps of Cadets participated in the Greensboro Veteran Day Parade. The Corps did a fantastic job and represented the Academy well. We want to thank all the parents and staff that made this event possible.

Senator Kay Hagin Air Traffic Control Tower

The color guard was invited to participate in the dedication ceremony at Piedmont Triad International Airport on November 15th. PTI opened the new FAA Air Traffic Control Tower in late September. The color guard met Jay Wagner, 1986 Battalion Commander and current High Point Mayor.

In June of 2019, the US Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration held a groundbreaking ceremony. The agency invested $58 million in the new facility. Female engineers led its design, procurement, and construction. The new tower is 180 feet tall, with a 550-square-foot cab to accommodate up to eight air traffic controllers. The tower has control of airspace within a 60-mile radius of the airport. The Senator Kay Hagin Air Traffic Control Tower replaced a 90-foot tower that had been in operation since 1974.

Freedom High School Drill Meet

Saturday October 29, 2022 the Oak Ridge Drill Team competed in a meet hosted by Freedom High School in Morganton, NC. They competed against nineteen other schools consisting of Army, Navy and Marines JROTC programs. The team competed in 15 different categories with ten first place wins.

The team placement for the drill meet is as follows:

3rd Place - Armed Platoon exhibition Command by C/SGT Green

3rd Place – Color Guard commanded by C/SSG Hunt

2nd Place Armed Solo Exhibition – performed by C/SGT Green. He competed against Cadet (12th Grader) who is 7th in the Nation.

Unarmed Knockout

1SG McCullough always encourages the Drill Team to participate in the knockout drill just prior to the awards ceremony. It is an intense competition where the instructors are relentless in their attention to detail. Command instruction must to carried out with precision. First place went to second year cadet C/PFC Roberts.

Halloween at the Ridge

Saturday evening, October 29th, part of the Corps of Cadets went to Kersey Valley Spooky Woods. Dr. Wilson was able to get passes for the Cadets to attend.

Mrs. Stevens, senior english teacher, hosted a viewing of Frankenstein at Maple Glade on October 30th for the Senior class. The seniors are finishing Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein.

The Citadel Visit

The Drill Team as well as several staff members went to the Citadel in SC on October 14th. Every Friday the Corps at the Citadel has a parade which our Cadets attended. The Cadets toured the historic college campus and met up with a few former ORMA Cadets who are attending the Citadel. Parker, Harrison, and Green are shown above with the drill team and below by themselves. The Drill meet was held on Saturday and went well. ORMA walked away with a number of trophies in addition to 1st place overall. We are very proud of the entire team.
