HE TAIAO, HE TAIORA, HE TAI TANGATA | Jobs for Nature
We want to share with whānau the great feedback that was recently provided by Tami Cave, Delivery Manager for Taranaki Jobs for Nature for Te Papa Atawhai (Department of Conservation).

I was fortunate to spend some time with the He Taiao, He Taiora, He Tai Tangata J4N project team on 28 November 2022.  My impressions as Delivery Manager are provided below, organised into three main observations.

Worksite: The premises that the team currently base themselves from was tidy, very well-organised and showed evidence of the team’s work planning. Preparation for next year’s mahi was apparent, with one large shade house already full of plants and the team in the midst of building another shade structure to house plants already potted up in the workshop. The connective value of the site was seen with other Toa Taiao and iwi staff present during the visit. Although we didn’t get to visit the new nursery site due to time constraints, I look forward to doing so at the next visit once the necessary infrastructure is in place.

Work towards contracted milestones: This project has three main milestone threads - Maara, Education, and the work of the Kaitiaki Ranger cadet.

Maara: Two planting sites were visited with the team (Te Puru and Warea Papakainga). To say I was impressed at the enormous amount of work visible at these sites would be an understatement! The maara team’s passion for their mahi and protecting the whenua was clearly evident as they walked and talked about their work, carefully surveying plants at each site and discussing their condition and response to the surroundings.  The team is well-exceeding their planting milestones and is keen to continue to maintain the momentum created thus far.

Education: The Education Coordinator has comprehensively met all education milestones for the year ended 31 Dec 2022, delivering at least 8 wānanga to local schools and kura. Strategic work to offer educational outreach through the project looks likely to land next year, with the potential for Gateway courses and accredited nursery training to be delivered in conjunction with Feats. It is extremely exciting to watch the upwards trajectory of this outcome and to see the wider benefit for whānau, hapū, iwi and the local community.

Kaitiaki Ranger cadet: Through brief kōrero with Fati, it appeared that he was enjoying his role. He talked of getting stuck in with Todd on the reserve sites. There is some upcoming work to review pest/weed control work plans and reserve management work plans.

Team dynamic: The team appear extremely happy and cohesive in their mahi. They are collaborative in their discussions, and it is clear to see that they value sharing and learning from one another. They have a clear purpose and understanding of the ‘why’ behind their work. Thoroughly impressed by the mahi to date and look forward to seeing the project’s progress at the next visit!
