A Musings Mystery

“Perhaps there’s a sort of grandiosity in every artist that we want to be the person who is remembered as The Great, The Serious, The World Changing. Maybe humility is accepting that we’re not going to be in charge of how we’re seen by posterity, and it actually doesn’t matter."

It isn't often that I find myself so greatly moved by a piece of digital content that I have to drop everything to share it.

Tonight is one of those nights.

If you aren't familiar with the Youtube channel Defunctland, it is documentary channel dedicated to discussing the history of theme parks and themed entertainment ventures. You may be familiar with their documentary of Disney's FastPass program, which has crossed 14 million viewers worldwide, or perhaps their deep dive into the history of Nickelodeon's failed hotel.

Their newest video, which explores the history behind the iconic four note theme attached to the Disney Channel, is a must watch, regardless of if you were a child during the channels heyday or not.

This exhaustive exploration of what it means to be an artist, what defines a legacy, and how seemingly small collaborations can change the world in a large way is incredibly moving.

As someone who has dedicated so much of my career thus far to the undersung artists who keep the musical machine moving, I was brought to tears, and I cannot think of a better way to spend 90 minutes than to take in this wonderful piece of documentary filmmaking.

“Aliens coming from outer space without our preconceptions of what makes great art, or what our preconceptions of what our best work is, may have a completely different idea in terms of what’s valuable of human creativity. A four-note mnemonic that, in its beautiful, minimal simplicity, completely captures an entire world of feeling and associations for millions of people across generations and around the world... I think that's a pretty outstanding legacy.”

All my love, always,
Margaret Hall
