Dear Friend,
Thank you for your interest in last night's webinar where we explored the importance of including sustainability in your curriculum and how you can engage your stakeholders including the children, the parents and the wider community.
We are most grateful to our presenters: the team from Hummingbird Montessori School in Kingston upon Thames, UK - Lenaig and Grace; Shalisa Agam from Montessori Jewish Day School in Toronto, Canada; and Sarah Johnson from Norwich Montessori School in Norwich, UK.
Our thanks also go to our wonderful facilitators who join us time and time again to guide your conversations in the break-out session: Heidi van Staden, Marion Meechan, Susanne van Niekerk and Wendy Compson.
A recording of the webinar is available
here.
And Lenaig has kindly pulled together a list of resources and ideas which can be accessed
here.
What struck us in the message shared by all presenters is that the best way to nurture engagement by all stakeholders is to follow the children's interests - their wow moments or, in Regina Lulka's (former head of Montessori Jewish Day School) words: when you see
"children with bright shining eyes". When the children are on board, the rest will follow. Or, as Shalisa so eloquently described:
From awareness in the individual, a lesson can be generated connecting the individual to their world, naturally progressing to a sense of school-wide responsibility for taking care of our world.
One final note... If you haven't yet read
Kavita Doodnauth's blog post on sustainability in education, do have a look - as it is a most thoughtful and inviting piece.
We hope you will join us again at our next webinar in which we explore the connection between Lev Vygotsky, Jean Piaget and our Montessori practice - the second in our Development series.
