Investigation: Labour Conditions in six Cross-border Parcel Centers

As cross-border e-commerce gains importance, Chinese parcel deliverers had spread their businesses to the overseas markets. While they become major competitors to international logistic giants, a question remains to be asked: what labour practice lies behind such bourgeoning business?

In the past months we’ve visited 3 areas in south China, including 6 logistic centers setup by 5 different companies. Through chats with workers, we found similar conditions - including the illegal ones - as in the manufacturing industries, and on top of that, a highly seasonal hiring practice that deprives workers of job consistency.

News Clipping: the Zhengzhou Foxconn Exodus

A pandemic breakout in the Zhengzhou Foxconn plant led to shambles in pandemic control measures, and shambles in pandemic control resulted in insecure workers fleeing from the factory — all the way back to their hometowns, on feet.

This combination of events reflects a very different environment for rural migrant workers, at least compared to 10-15 years ago. A few aspects worth further inspection.
