Another year has come and gone – and what a year it has been! While each one brings its own set of challenges and opportunities, 2022 has been filled with more change and progress than usual. As our region continues to evolve quickly, it’s all the more important that we remain attentive and responsive to our community’s transportation needs. And this year – our 20th anniversary as an agency – we succeeded in making great strides in mobility for Central Texas, continuing to uphold our mission and purpose decades later.
A few 2022 highlights include:
• Breaking ground on the 183 North Mobility Project. The Project aims to improve mobility, reduce congestion and provide more reliable travel times for transit and emergency responders along the 9-mile section of US 183 between SH 45 North and Loop 1 (MoPac), a critical corridor in our regional transportation network. Construction began early this year and significant progress has been made as crews work on resurfacing the existing roadway, utility relocations and sidewalk and business driveway enhancements along the corridor.
• Now more than 40 percent into construction, the 183A Phase III Projectremains on schedule for completion in early 2025.Designed to deliver proactive congestion relief, the new 183A Toll lanes will stretch from Hero Way to just north of SH 29. Crews have already begun excavation and bridge construction at the intersection of SH 29 and US 183, a critical component to project delivery. In addition, significant non-tolled improvements have begun including installation of the pedestrian bridge that will connect the new adjacent shared use path across the San Gabriel River.
• This fall, the Board of Directors awarded the contract for construction of the Barton Skyway Ramp Relief Project to Dan Williams Company, clearing the way for construction to begin in 2023. Concerns for congestion and safety prompted the Mobility Authority to expedite delivery of this relief project. The Project will add pavement for auxiliary and merge lanes on southbound MoPac between Bee Caves Road and Loop 360 intended to alleviate congestion north towards Winsted Lane.
• The Mobility Authority co-hosted the International Bridge, Tunnel & Turnpike Association’s (IBTTA) 2022 annual conference this year in Austin. Each year, transportation agencies across the world come together to exchange ideas and share new innovations and best practices to address the critical infrastructure challenges of the 21st century. Our agency continues to be a mobility leader, delivering innovative transportation solutions that aid our community and inspire others in the industry.
• The Mobility Authority Board of Directors adopted a new Strategic Plan. The agency invested over a year working with the Board, staff, and key stakeholders to outline and define the goals and initiatives for the coming years. This comprehensive framework also establishes a new set of core values that not only encapsulate who we are as an agency but also how we will fulfill our mission to develop, deliver, operate and maintain high-quality roadways and related transportation solutions.
As the end of year draws near, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you – our partners, neighbors, and all who have participated and engaged with us. You have helped us achieve a great deal for this community, making an impact where it matters the most in transportation, connectivity, and accessibility.
We are moving forward into 2023 with great optimism and determination to continue improving regional mobility and the lives of Central Texans.
