Sunday, December 4, 4 p.m. Repairing the World: Stories from the Tree of Life documents Pittsburgh's powerful community response to hate and antisemitism in the aftermath of the deadly attack at the Tree of Life synagogue in 2018 that killed eleven people. Panel discussion featuring NIOT founder, Patrice O’Neill, following film at the Sabes Center (4330 Cedar Lake Rd, SLP). Register 

Wednesday, December 7, 7 p.m. Join the Symphony Orchestra for their first with a full symphony in more than two years! This event will be the final concert conducted by Amir Kats, who has led the symphony for the past 10 years. Stay after the concert for a reception honoring his dedication and contributions to a decade of music at the J (1375 St Paul Ave, St. Paul). Registration Required

 Wednesday December 7, 8 p.m. Join local designer and author Claude Riedel in conversation about the Ner Tamid or Eternal Light that is found in many sacred spaces. Through December 9. Out of Darkness Into the Light is an exhibition at the Jewish Cultural Center in Chattanooga, TN (5461 N Terrace, Rd, Chattanooga, TN). Eddie Estrin’s original song “Vayehi Ora” was selected by curator Ann Treadwell along with other artworks on display for the show.  Listen to his song HERE

Tuesday, December 13, 6 p.m. Presented as part of the Yiddish Book Center’s 2022 Great Jewish Books Club, "Fear and Other Stories," translated by Anita Norich, from Yiddish to English of the collected stories of Chana Blankshteyn (~1860–1939). These stories were published in July 1939, just before the Nazis invaded Poland and two weeks before Blankshteyn’s death. Norich’s introduction argues that this is not a work of Holocaust literature (there are no death camps, partisans or survivors of WWII), but anti-Semitism is palpable, as is the threat of war and its aftermath. Sunday, December 18, 2:30 p.m. Wendy's Wiggle Jiggle & Jam! at the Capp Center (1375 St Paul Ave, St. Paul) invites children (ages 0-8) and their families to sing, dance, play and move together during this Winter Concert. Ongoing. The Milken Archive is a source of quality Jewish art and culture. Currently, you can explore composer Lukas Foss’s (1922–2009) work via video, text, and sound; or you can prepare for the Jewish High Holy Days with The S’lihot Service as a Sacred Concert by streaming the radio program, A Season for Forgiveness. The program features the complete S’lihot service according to orthodox practice with Cantor Benzion Miller and Schola Hebraeica. Well known New York radio host Larry Josephson moderates a conversation between Rabbi Ishmar Schorsch and Neil W. Levin on the meaning and significance of this “religious concert.” Explore

Ongoing. Join other dancers from the Twin Cities and from around the world in a live Zoom Israeli dance session. Led by Shira and Michael Schwartz, the group meets weekly every Sunday from 6-9 PM (CT). The first half-hour is teaching, then circle dancing till 8 pm. 8-9 pm is partner dancing. What a great way to add needed exercise to our pandemic lives along with the cultural and social connection we are all craving! Even if you don't dance or can't in your current situation, this is a wonderful way to connect to Israeli culture. For the Zoom link, contact michael@konikoff.com 

Ongoing. Shira and Michael have also started a live Israeli dance session. Dance every Thursday from 7-9:30 pm at the Tapestry Folk Dance Center (3748 Minnehaha Ave, Mpls). Tuesday, December 6, 7 p.m. Rabbi Tobias Moss will begin a monthly class “The Jews Are Coming.” As profound as Torah study, and as funny as Saturday Night Live, “The Jews Are Coming” (HaYehudim Baim) is an Israeli sketch comedy show that explores Jewish history and traditions. As we laugh at ourselves, we will discover the textual depth that underlies this uniquely Jewish form of comedy. In-Person at Temple Israel. Info and registration 

Sunday, December 11, 12 p.m. Novelist and memoirist Boris Fishman will demystify the process of writing a scene, for FREE. Learn how dialogue, setting, plot, and character all come together seamlessly. Fiction and nonfiction writers are welcome. Register

from Deeper Water Arts is offering various workshops including Creative Choreography/Movement Games. Relax with a guided movement meditation, then take the option to re-energize through creative movement play! We will play games, compose mini dance scores, and develop ways to begin creating something from nothing. Yes, everyone is a dancer in this workshop! Through an intentionally positive space, participants will get to create and grow in community, celebrate their physical selves and abilities, build self-worth, and most importantly, have fun! Wednesday, December 21, 6:30 p.m. The Ongoing Moment is intended to be a monthly meeting for photographers who wish to increase their understanding and improve their practice of the medium. The title refers to the idea that "we share experiences that are formally similar.” It is intended for all levels and for all interests from landscape to abstract, reportage to street photography. The Ongoing Moment will review both photographic prints and Hi-Res digital images. The Ongoing Moment is hosted by Mpls-based photographers Richard Ott and Walter Horishnyk. Minnesota State Arts Board Recruiting Grant Application Reviewers. The Arts Board seeks individuals from a variety of backgrounds to review grant applications remotely, serving a four-week term sometime between September 2022 and February 2023. Public funds belong to all Minnesotans, so a broad spectrum of perspectives and experiences is vital to our grant-making process. Serving as an Arts Board grant application reviewer, you’ll not only gain insight into what makes an effective application but also forge new connections with fellow reviewers who share your passion while supporting the arts community in Minnesota. You’ll receive a modest financial stipend for your time providing feedback on applications and helping determine which will be recommended to receive funding. Art Studio--For the Artist in You. Learn painting and drawing in a supportive and fun class, for those with no previous art experience and for those who wish to perfect their art techniques. The Vickie Benson Resource Lab is re-opening next month at Springboard for the Arts on University Ave in St. Paul! The Lab offers free access to flatbed scanners (8.5x11” and 11x17”), Adobe Creative Cloud programs and artwork photo documentation space. You can reserve time to work on your own, or you can request basic assistance from a Technical Specialist. By appointment only

Jewish dance scholarship has arrived: The Oxford Handbook of Jewishness and Dance is both a culmination of decades of scholarship and a new look into the intersection of dance and Jewishness. Aberdeen: A Jewish History- 105 years of Congregation B'nai Isaac and the Community it Brought Together is hot off the press. The Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest's latest journal was researched and written by JHSUM Executive Director, Robin Doroshow. The A.V. Closet is a Springboard for the Arts service that allows artists to borrow cameras, lighting equipment, projectors and other audio-visual equipment, and it's back on University Avenue! Equipment can be borrowed for one week (six overnights from Friday to the following Friday) at no charge, for one rental period per month. You can check out up to six items per rental period.
