GIVING THANKS

We’re Celebrating Community

Plus we’re debunking a myth or two

Dear friend,

Here’s a poetry gift to carry you during this weekend of giving thanks: it’s one of our favorites.

What the Day Gives

by Jeanne Lohmann

Suddenly, sun. Over my shoulder
in the middle of gray November
what I hoped to do comes back,
asking.

Across the street the fiery trees
hold onto their leaves,
red and gold in the final months
of this unfinished year,
they offer blazing riddles.

In the frozen fields of my life
there are no shortcuts to spring,
but stories of great birds in migration
carrying small ones on their backs,
predators flying next to warblers
they would, in a different season, eat.

Stunned by the astonishing mix in this uneasy world
that plunges in a single day from despair
to hope and back again, I commend my life
to Ruskin’s difficult duty of delight,
and to that most beautiful form of courage,
to be happy.

—from The Light of Invisible Bodies, Daniels and Daniels Publishers, 2003

Thank you for supporting this work; you give us hope

We want to thank everyone who has participated in our community this year: writers, artists, authors, leaders, speakers, Board members, editors, proofreaders, donors, sponsors, media partners, and fans: Thank you. You give us “hope and back again” as we commend our lives to courage, and happiness. A special thanks to our Anthology team, led by managing editor Chiqui Chua; the book is at the printing press right now! To attend the Release Party and river tour afterwards, REGISTER HERE.

Let’s debunk some myths in the meantime

Folks, there’s lots of good information out there about the myth of Thanksgiving. Let’s educate ourselves. It’s important to pay attention to the stories that define our lives...and erase us, or create myths about us. Here's info from the World Economic Forum on how to celebrate Thanksgiving while debunking the myths; check it out. DEBUNKING

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO LATELY

We saved a bird! And we went to CoRK.

Celebrating some cool guys we know.

These  kind men from JSO and the Florida Wildlife Conservation took time on a Sunday to rescue a female anhinga we found hanging from string over a swamp! Yes, he dove into that water! Thank you, Ofcrs. Chris Schirbock, “Rez” Rezendes, and D. Sakkab, for going above and beyond. And to the ARK Wildlife team for the rehab and release! Yay!
It was so much fun to attend the CoRK Open Studios last weekend and talk with amazing humans like Keith Doles and his next-door studio neighbor, Doug Eng. These guys are doing the work, using their art to care for their community and educate us on what’s most important in their view. Thanks, guys, for shining your light.
