Rebounding

Good news from Catholic schools: A national report shows that Catholic schools recovered faster from the pandemic than public schools. Fourth and eighth graders were tested in reading and math for the National Assessment of Educational Progress. How were Catholic schools able to rebound?
The National Catholic Educational Association said Catholic schools’ scores have nearly returned to pre-pandemic levels, except for __________.

A. Fourth-grade reading
B. Eighth-grade math
C. Fourth-grade math

(Answer at the bottom)

JUST ONE MINUTE

In life, there is a direct relationship between the amount of gratitude we express and the amount of joy we experience. St. Paul wisely counsels the Thessalonians and Ephesians to give thanks: “In all circumstances give thanks'' (1 Thess 5:18) and  “giving thanks always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.” (Eph 5:20).

Reflection: On Thursday we observed Thanksgiving. A wonderful spiritual practice is to keep a gratitude journal. At the end of each day write down a brief notation about three things you are grateful for. People who have maintained this practice for 30 days notice a significant increase in their experience of joy and a decrease in their stress and frustration.

— Deacon Danny Hartnedy

St. Barbara

Dec. 4

St. Barbara was an early Christian Greek martyr, born in the third century in Heliopolis, Phoenicia. Known for her extreme beauty, her mother Dioscorus wanted to protect her and locked her in a tower. She is the patron of artillerymen, architects, mathematicians and miners.

DAVE SAYS

Paying off college loan

My mom took out a Parent PLUS loan in 2009 to help pay for my college education. I also took out $70,000 in student loans myself. My mom never made a payment on the loan she took out for me, and now the amount due on the Parent PLUS loan has ballooned to $100,000. Should I take over the Parent PLUS loan under my name?
Never put loan in your name

WHAT'S NEW?

Close the gap

Parishioners are asked to help close a $500,000 gap between what Catholic schools charge for tuition and what it costs to educate a child. While a Catholic family pays $4,147 for elementary school on average, the annual cost of educating one student is $6,532. Schools use endowment funds and donations to make up the difference. Some schools are still short of funds.
