In the wake of several more mass shootings over the past two weeks, I find myself drawn to God's vision as proclaimed by the prophet Isaiah: a vision of all nations streaming to the house of the Lord to learn God's ways of justice and righteousness and everlasting peace. I wonder: Can you imagine a world where people would beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks? I imagine it would be a wonderful world where instead of fighting each other, neighbor would help neighbor, and people would devote energy and resources to making sure everyone had enough to eat.

     That's God's vision, and as God's people, you and I are invited to participate in helping that vision become a reality. How are we to do this? By walking in the light of God and reflecting that light for others to see. In the words of our baptismal liturgy, "Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and give glory to God."

     Tomorrow we step over the threshold into Advent, the season when the members of Christ's Church prepare our hearts and homes to receive God's greatest gift. As we light the candles on the Advent wreath over the next four weeks, I invite you to join me in prayerfully pondering the mystery of Jesus Christ, the Light of the World. As we pray and ponder, let's ask God to give us the courage and strength we need to be light bearers in the name of Christ. "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it."
