A Letter From Our Executive Director

Dear friends,

There was no better way to kick off our 50th Anniversary celebration this past September than by welcoming back our community for in-person instruction. On that first day, I was greeted by longtime student Ishmael who arrived extra early for his class. He gave me a smile and said, “Steve, I’m home again.”

Our halls are once again filled with the sound of beautiful accents and languages from all corners of the globe. Old friends have reconnected and new friendships are forming. Most importantly, new skills are being learned as our students work to improve their lives through literacy.

With the return to in-person instruction, we are also able to provide additional services. In the past four months, LVGH has:

  • Hosted five vaccine clinics, resulting in 97 people receiving COVID and Flu shots.
  • Welcomed back employer partners for career and resource fairs.
  • Invested in TVs/laptops/digital tools to integrate the best of the virtual experience into in-person learning.
  • Enrolled over 400 students in our programs.

Thank you to everyone who makes our community so great: our tutors, supporters, students, and staff. I’m so grateful for your time, resources and support this past year. Looking ahead to 2023, we are working on some new additions to our career-training program while continuing to find ways to meet the ever-growing demand for our literacy services. It will be another exciting and impactful year.

For fifty years, LVGH has been there for some of the most vulnerable, yet resilient members of our community. For as long as they seek our support, we will continue to provide that home away from home for our students.

Happy Holidays from all of us at LVGH!

Steve

From Ukraine to Hartford
Veronika's Story

In 2013, Veronika was working part-time at her parents' office supply store while attending University in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine.  That winter, their world changed abruptly, and the family had to leave the only home Veronika had ever known.

They arrived in Hartford in the Spring of 2014 with a long "To Do" list:  find a new home, secure new jobs, and a school for Veronika.  Yet, none of these goals could be achieved until they learned to speak English.

Watch Veronika share her story.

Veronika's inspiring story is just one of thousands that could be shared.  Since 1972, LVGH has had the honor of accompanying over 25,000 individuals on their journey toward literacy, and a changed life.

Your support of our work has made that possible.  With your continued commitment we can help today's students, and tomorrow's as well.

Please consider a gift today, and help change a life through literacy.

LVGH and Harriott Home Health Services hosted two vaccine clinics this month, offering flu, COVID, and Mpox vaccines free of charge to the community (left). We were able to help 55 people get vaccinated with a total of 91 vaccines. Thank you so much to everyone who came out!

Chef Jim presented Food Service Training Program student Phillip with the Student of the Month award for his perfect attendance in the program (right). Congrats, Phillip!
