Dear Neighbor, Before we turn the page to 2023, let’s run through the important things your town is working on to ensure East Hartford is a great community to live, work and play. We introduced the Control Tower and the 25 transformative projects to move East Hartford forward.
We wait for a Superior Court judge to transfer the Silver Lane Plaza to the Town so we can advertise it for future development and a fresh start to the area
Rentschler Field will be home to 2.5 million sq. ft. of warehouse space along with 2,000 new jobs, new impact, permit, and tax revenue.
Concourse Park is in the final stages of securing financing to build over 300 apartments on the old Showcase Cinema site.
The Town will purchase the Church Corners Inn building on January 10th using state funds. This building has destabilized our downtown and this purchase will allow us to bring stability back to this area.
The Town is in the final stages of injecting $4 million in economic stimulus to local businesses. Request for Proposals for a Sports Bubble and a Truck Wash facility have capable respondents, with both projects important to our youth and our ability to slow down the corrosion on our plow and Public Works vehicles.
We are finally making the necessary investment to renovate the Town Hall building to fix structural and systems issues.
The ADA-compliant Wickham Library with new programming will open in the next few weeks, giving folks along Burnside Avenue access to library programming.
In 2022, we launched a monthly newsletter available in 100 languages to reach our diverse community.
We held the Memorial Day Parade after a 6-year absence. It showed once again that East Hartford is a community that honors their Veterans in a meaningful way.
Plans to demolish McCartin School are underway to expand home-ownership in Town, but not before a reunion of alumni that was held there over the summer.
The re-branded East Hartford Works! continues to link residents to jobs through job training, apprenticeships, or resume building exercises.
We hired a Community Mental Health Coordinator to work closely with Police to better assist residents in behavioral and mental health crisis.
As I close, I would like to thank my incredible team of directors and staff who ensure that we adhere to the vision, mission and goals for the betterment of our community.
As you can see, 2022 was a busy year, but 2023 will be busier. Working together, your town is moving forward, so all aboard in 2023! -Mayor Michael P. Walsh |

Recycling Notice Tags |
East Hartford Department of Public Works has started a new strategy to address the high contamination rate in the blue carts. We are using notice tags. If you see these tags hanging on your door, it means you are putting unacceptable items in your blue cart. Please remove these items and place them in your refuse cart. It is important to let you know that the contamination rate in blue carts is 53%. This means that on average, more than half of the content of the blue carts is unacceptable. Recycling clean in your blue carts costs $0/Ton, while for unacceptable recyclables the Town pays $115/Ton. We appreciate your recycling efforts, but we ask that you RECYCLE CLEAN! RECYCLING CLEAN means being cautious of what you put in your recycling cart. Please be thoughtful about what you place in the blue cart: when in doubt, throw it out in your green trash cart. Please check the following list of what not to put in your blue recycling cart: NO plastic bags. Do not bag your recyclables (put them loose in a cart) NO plastic wrappers of paper towels, toilet paper, bottles of water, etc. NO Styrofoam (food containers, Styrofoam packaging, etc.) NO food scraps. NO yard waste. Empty and rinse food and beverage containers before putting them in the blue cart.
These items do not go in the blue cart. They go in the refuse cart. Remember, East Hartford Recycles Clean! |

IMPORTANT NEWS FROM THE HEALTH CORNER |
| January is National Blood Donor month!A yearly reminder for the public to roll up their sleeves and make a lifesaving impact within the community. Historically, January is a period of critical blood shortages. There are a variety of reasons for the shortage – some people stop donating blood during the holidays, when they are feeling sick and occasionally winter weather closes local blood drives. This year is no different and the nation’s blood supply has dipped to concerning low levels. This low supply could force hospitals to delay essential blood and platelet transfusions, so they need your help to save lives! Blood donors of all blood types – particularly type O blood, are needed now to give blood to help meet daily hospital demands. To schedule an appointment at a local blood drive, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). |
| | January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month! More than 14,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer yearly, but there are steps we can take to decrease these numbers. Since cervical cancer is most often diagnosed over the age of 30, testing (screening) should begin at age 25. When cervical cancer is found early, it is highly treatable and associated with a good quality of life. The Connecticut Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program is a comprehensive screening program available throughout Connecticut for women without health insurance. All services are offered free of charge through the Connecticut Department of Public Health’s contracted health care providers located statewide. For more information about enrollment or eligibility criteria, visit the CT DPH website or call 860-509-7804. |

Rosa's Café & Bakery, LLC was founded in honor of Rosa Cruz, a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a resident of East Hartford for over 40 years. Rosa came to the United States from her native Puerto Rico during the summer of 1965 to work the tobacco fields here in Connecticut, where she met her future husband, Angel Cruz. After a whirlwind romance, they started a family and eventually settled with their four children in East Hartford, CT. As the matriarch of the Cruz family, Rosa's cooking was always the main event during any family gathering or holiday party. When she wasn't cooking, you could always catch her sipping her favorite cup of coffee while mastering her crosswords or watching her novellas. Her love of coffee and cooking, coupled with her love of the East Hartford community is what inspired us to open this café. Sadly, Rosa lost her battle with progressed to the Alzheimer's disease in October 2021. We are proud to continue sharing her legacy with the community she called home for so many years. A portion of our profits will go towards supporting the Alzheimer's Association. Visit www.alz.org for more information. Thank you for your support and patronage. |

| Message from the Fire Chief Happy 2023! As we enter a new year an alarming trend is forming across the country. Motor vehicle collisions and accidents involving pedestrians are on the rise. As East Hartford is a pedestrian-friendly community, I wanted to take a moment to urge all motorists to drive with caution throughout town. Many of the accidents we respond to are a result of careless driving or excessive speed. While on the topic of driving, please remember to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles. Time is never on our side in a fire or medical emergency and seconds matter. Allowing fire, EMS, and police vehicles the right of way could be the difference maker in an emergency. Our offices are prepared to answer any questions you may have about fire safety. And don’t forget, our Fire Marshal’s office is always available for free smoke alarm installation. The FMO can be reached at 860-291-7405. -Chief Kevin Munson |

Some of you might know Rick Bollash, a proud East Hartford resident who puts up a spectacular Christmas Display on Oak Street every year. People from all over come to see the display, and all Mr. Bollash asks for in return are non-perishable food items and/or monetary donations to benefit the East Hartford Food Bank. This year, the Grinch visited the display and stole Mr. Bollash’s box of donations. We reached out to our community to see what people could do to help Mr. Bollash save Christmas. We knew East Hartford would come to the rescue, but the final result was way beyond what we expected. Thank you to everyone who donated for your generosity! Thanks to you, many East Hartford families will be able to have a lovely holiday meal that they would not have had otherwise. Congratulations, East Hartford - You saved Christmas! |
