UT Representation at the LASA2023 Congress
LLILAS is a Latin American Studies Association (LASA) partner, along other prestigious centers for Latin American Studies across the globe. More than 60 Latin Americanists, including faculty, staff, and students, will represent UT Austin at the 2023 LASA Congress, to be held May 24–27 in Vancouver, B.C. Archiving Black América: New Initiative Will Focus on Afro-Latin America
How does our past, present, and future vision of the Americas change when it is examined by Black cultural producers, activists, and theorists from Latin America and the Caribbean? Archiving Black América, a new LLILAS Benson initiative, will amplify and support teaching, research, and outreach on the UT campus related to Afro-Latin America. Learn more here.

Writing on the Edge: Professor Adela Pineda Offers Course on Literature and Incarceration
LLILAS Director Professor Adela Pineda Franco will offer a new course in spring 2023 titled Writing on the Edge: Literature and Incarceration. The course is offered to both graduate and undergraduate students, with listings in LLILAS for graduate students and Spanish & Portuguese for undergrads.

Archiving Black América Black Diaspora Archive Acquisitions Award
This award provides UT Austin and Huston-Tillotson University community members engaged in research and/or community development work with supplemental travel funding to develop archival collections documenting Black life in the Americas. Read all details at ABA-BDA Acquisitions Award.
Mellon Faculty Research Grants

This presentation by Tinker Visiting Professor Daniel Party is part of a book-length project that seeks to counteract the tendency to interpret Jara’s life and works from the perspective of his death, focusing instead on the multi-dimensional nature of his artistic pursuits and achievements.  Seth Garfield's Guaraná Receives Three Nominations for Gourmand Awards
 Earliest Known Maya Calendar Found in Guatemala
Evidence for the earliest known Maya calendar was discovered in Guatemala by UT Austin researchers.
Fragments found by Professor David Stuart (Dept. of Art and Art History) indicate that the calendar was in use as early as 300 B.C., far earlier than previously known. Read more here.
