Planning for SMSC and PSHE for Spring 2023?
This term we continue to bring you a wide range of FREE resources to support SMSC education with many important dates and holidays celebrated in the Spring 2023 term. In this issue, we have explored the theme of communication – looking at how teaching communication skills can improve the world around us. On 17th January Energy Saving Week begins, students can learn to use their voices to promote renewable energy and energy efficiency in their home. World Wildlife Day, on March 3rd is an opportunity to learn more about all manner of species around the globe – and for students to think about how they can use their voices to support endangered species. Sign Language Week, commencing March 14th, gives students time to consider how they can better communicate with their peers, improving their understanding of Sign Language and how/why people use it. Finally, 21st March marks World Poetry Day – a space for students to learn how they can express themselves through the written word and learn more about how those before them have used poetry to communicate throughout history.

Scroll down for great resources to help with these and many other learning opportunities.
Spiritual: World Wildlife Day 3rd March

“A sense of enjoyment in learning about the world around them”

“An ability to be reflective about their own beliefs, that inform their perspective on life” Ofsted

On 3rd December 2013, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed the 3rd March as UN World Wildlife Day to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild animals and plants. World Wildlife Day is a fantastic opportunity to explore endangered species and learn about a variety of animals from around the world. One way to celebrate this day in school may be to share some amazing facts about an endangered animal with each other and the wider school community. It’s an opportunity to teach the children about how animals rely on our support and vice versa. Why not watch a clip from Blue Planet or from Ladybird and BBC young learning clips, these can be used to create discussions and to spark interest.

Moral: Energy Saving Week 17th-23rd January

“Interest in investigating and offering reasoned views about moral and ethical issues”

“Understanding of the consequences of their behaviour and actions” Ofsted

Energy Saving Week is a campaign where families are encouraged to help save energy by following some simple guidelines. Schools can help to teach children about what energy use is and how, through renewable energy, low carbon transport and home energy efficiency, it can play an important role in reducing carbon emissions.

Why not set the children a task to create an energy saving action plan for school and their homes? It could include a list of different things that they can do at home and in school to help reduce their energy use. This could get children thinking about their energy consumption in a fun and engaging way and give the children the responsibility for helping save energy.

Social:  Sign Language Week 14th-20th March

“Use a range of social skills in different contexts”

“Develop and demonstrate skills and attitudes that will allow them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain” Ofsted

Sign language week is celebrated each year in March to coincide with the anniversary of the recognition of British Sign Language (BSL) by the UK Government in 2003. Sign Language Week is a week organised by the British Deaf Association (BDA) to promote awareness of issues affecting sign-language users and, the welfare of deaf people in the UK. The idea of the week is to raise awareness of the problems that sign-language users encounter daily. As a class why not try to learn some simple signs or find out some facts about British Sign Language and the Deaf community, or perhaps listen to a celebrity Sign Language Ambassador and find out what BSL means to them.
Cultural: World Poetry Day 21st March

“Willingness to participate in and respond positively to artistic, musical and cultural opportunities “

“Understanding and appreciation of the wide range of cultural influences “Ofsted

World poetry Day was created by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation ( UNESCO)

“In celebrating World Poetry Day …UNESCO recognises the unique ability of poetry to capture the creative spirit of the human mind”

Why not have fun listening to some famous poets reading their poetry aloud? The Children’s Poetry archive has many different styles and themes of poetry to inspire budding poets or watch and listen to famous poets such as Michael Rosen here

In 39 weekly episodes, the ‘It’s Jesus!’ Worship Curriculum will help children understand the historic, ethnic and religious perspective of Jesus. They will be able to empathise with the cultures and perspectives of the billions of subscribers to the 3 major world religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) that he influenced.

The key moments of Jesus’ life will be told as individual parts of a comprehensive and (broadly) chronological series. The Bible based reflections and applications will, as ever, be gentle, generous, fun, engaging, thoughtful, inspiring, and value-laden - universally accessible to kids of all household backgrounds. The pack is being written in such a way that teachers of any/no faith-subscription, can feel confident to use it.
