Sabrina, a youth aging out of care, shares her story

Imagine growing up unsafe in your own home. Well, when I was 14 years old, being at home with my biological family became unsafe, and it was then when I was entered into foster care.
Throughout my teen years I moved into a group home and I began to really struggle with mental health and drug use. I fell into negative habits and didn’t attend school or do what I was supposed to. During my time in care with CCAS Hamilton, I have had a few workers who I really clicked with, and who have stepped into my life and advocated for me in ways that no one else has. The role of the workers can have a tremendous impact on youth like me in care. At times, they are the only ones we have to guide us on the right path.
It is because of the support of the Society and the drive of my workers that I was able to go to rehab to get the help I needed during a tough time in my life. The Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Hamilton supported me while I have worked to overcome my struggle with addiction and get clean. I could not have done this alone. Your donations enabled the CCAS Hamilton to support my journey to a better life. My life changed for the better because of this support from donors. I owe a big part of my rehab success to the Society and the support from people who choose to support the CCAS Hamilton and their mission to help youth like me.
You should know that donations helped keep me off the streets. I have been able to have a roof over my head, clean clothes to wear and food to eat because of donations made to the Society. Ultimately, donations helped me have necessities I otherwise wouldn’t have. The trajectory of my entire life has changed because people like you chose to donate to the CCAS Hamilton, and help youth like me. I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for the CCAS Hamilton paying for services to help me heal and grow.

With support from donors, we have been able to provide the children, youth and families we serve with gift cards and gift bags to brighten their holiday season. However, with the rising cost of inflation, families in our community will continue to struggle to put food on the table or have a roof over their heads as we move into the new year.
