Multi Best In Show, Multi Reserve Best In Show, Multi Best In Specialty Show American Grand Champion Gold & Canadian Grand Champion

Now and then Watermark Cruisin At Kelkary

We are proud to have Steel on this weeks front cover of ShowScene.

Steel is America's:
No:1 Bearded Collie (All Breed) and A Top 10 Herding Dog.

Steel started his career in Canada where he won Puppy in Show at his first show and hasn't looked back. He has been awarded Multiple All Breed "Best in Shows" and many Group 1st. He was Best of Breed at Westminster Kennel Club 2021 and the National Championship in Orlando 2021.

At 5 years old and fully mature Steel has proven he is a force to be reckoned with, as he heads to Orlando this year for his final easy run around the ring with his partner Mark Bettis. Win or lose Steel and Mark will finish the year as America's No. 1 Bearded Collie.
Steel's beautiful movement, and excellent temperament and natural herding ability, makes him all Beardie. He is an amazing companion never having a bad day. He is a great show dog but above all is a proven producer.
Even though we will smile with a little tear in our eyes as we watch his last dance with Mark. His legacy will continue with His Best in Show winning granddaughter Georgie, BIS Can GCH Corimist Destiny Awaits (Imp UK), joining our team for 2022.
BIS Can GCH  Corimist Destiny Awaits (Imp UK)
We would like to thank all the judges for appreciating our blue "Steel" throughout his campaign.
Thank you to Arleen Berry for your undeniable support of Steel. Jan Osterbauer for putting your trust in us and sending your boy Steel to show everyone in America what a Blue Beardie from Germany could do. 💙 Thank you to his breeder Sylke Werner for breeding this amazing dog.
We are all incredibly proud of everything Steel has achieved in his career and we could never ask more of this handsome Blue boy. Steel it has been a privilege to be your family these last two years. So go and run and enjoy your week in Orlando with your best friend Mark.
We love you Steel💙💙💙

Remembering Sandy Anderson

Woodside German Shepherds
December 18, 1954 – December 4, 2022

I am so incredibly sad to have lost one of my dearest friends, the great Sandy Anderson, a woman so strong, with a breeding program of so many consistent and incredible dogs stamped with that Woodside undeniable look.

She was a woman so full of knowledge of the German Shepherd, I’m grateful she got to share a lot of that with me. You taught me so much and what I would do for one more good morning phone call, or another “I gotta go Dean Patterson is calling!

I love and will cherish the memories we had, I loved camping at your place and working dogs all day. Looking at puppies and helping you with breeding’s. The dinners and wine nights where you told all the stories of some of the best days of your life in dogs. The long drives that you talked me home with, as you were awake at the strangest hours, the pudding and cool whip nights when I would stay over. The Greys Anatomy talks, and the catch ups after Heartland.

The reason my nails got done, she was the most honest lady… sometimes brutally honest, but you always knew her opinion, you always knew when you needed to do better and she sure could push you to reach those goals. I’ll always hear her say “ye of the tiger “to me when I needed it.

She was such a special person. I cannot thank her enough for the opportunities she gave to me, the places her and her dogs have taken me, and for allowing me to share and love so many Shepherds which I will continue to do and hopefully continue to make her proud.

Thanks to her I was introduced to a whole new world of an amazing GSD family.
This hurts terribly to have lost you so soon, but you will live on in these dogs and we will love them with as much passion as you did.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I met Sandy Anderson back in 1986 at a dog show. When I moved to Vancouver in 1990, she quickly became a client and dear friend. I showed her dogs. It was the beginning of a bond that would never end.
Sandy was close to both her parents, especially her mom. She respected them and cared for them as they did for her. The family was important. Sandy was the youngest of three daughters and she seemed to grow up fast.
Sandy was competitive. She started with show horses and then show dogs, beginning with Doberman Pinschers. But she soon fell in love with German Shepherd Dogs. Early in her breeding program, an experienced German Shepherd Dog competitor confronted Sandy and said she would be nothing in this breed. That hurt her deeply and she never forgot it. She soon came to defy those words by becoming one of North America’s most successful breeders for more than four (4) decades.
On the inside, Sandy was painfully shy. She didn't allow people to take her photograph. She was much better at talking on the phone than in person. She came to overcome most of her shyness by reaching out to others.
Sandy’s greatest strength was in her manner of communication. No one asked better questions, uncovered more facts, and told better stories than Sandy. She held strong opinions on all matters, especially German Shepherd Dogs.
While Sandy could be shy and even awkward around adults, she captured the attention and admiration of all children. Children were drawn to her, and she often focused her attention on them. When a family came to buy a puppy, Sandy knew everything about the children within ten minutes; their hobbies, favorite subjects, and even what they wanted to be when they grew up. She would focus her attention on them, especially the shy ones. That was all part of her natural charm.
Sandy had one of the most discerning (critical) eyes for a dog. She knew structure, temperament, and movement, and she openly shared her knowledge with others. She mentored many of us around her. To me, she was a second mom and a best friend. There was nothing I didn’t tell her, and she knew how to give me feedback. It was direct and often critical, but she wasn’t generally off the mark by much, if at all. Sandy listened actively, asked questions, and presented solutions. She also expected you to take her advice every time!
Sandy often had a hundred irons in the fire at any one time, but without a doubt, her dogs came first. Her kennel was always in immaculate condition. Her dogs were well-fed and had fresh water. They were the priority… her assignment in life. She could go without....her dogs never did!!
Everyone knew where they stood with Sandy. She didn’t mince her words. If you were in her favor, there was nothing she wouldn’t do for you. If you made her angry it was probably best to steer clear of her until she got over it if she ever did.
The death of one of her dogs was often too much for her to bear. She’d reach out at those times and ask for the help of others. Sandy couldn’t cope with that final trip to the vet’s office.
Many of her closest friends passed away and that was always hard on Sandy. Don Cliff, Peter Faucher, and Doris Satra were but a few of her loved ones she deeply mourned. My mom loved Sandy as one would a daughter, and Sandy looked up to her. Mom's passing was hard for Sandy too.
Although not a religious person, she often carried a small bible in her coat pocket, especially in times of struggle. She also was superstitious about various objects including a rubber monkey who carried immense powers. Sandy believed what she believed, and no one could convince her otherwise.
Sandy and I had our ups and downs, but I never doubted her love and support. She was one of those people who came into your life for life!! I am forever grateful for her love, friendship, and wisdom.
I heard from Sandy a few weeks ago. She spoke of her diagnosis. Although dire, there was a message of hope that was intertwined. God’s speed Sandy. We will never forget Woodside German Shepherds and I will never forget your beautiful soul. Rest in peace, my dear.
I don’t know where to begin…. I will miss so many things but mainly the 6am conversations with you. You were one of kind and your legacy will live on. We will all do our best to keep your dream alive.
This quote seemed so fitting….
“Death is not an ending, but a symbol of movement along the path upon which we are all traveling. As it may be painful to lose contact with the physical aspect of one we love, the Spirit can never be lost. We have been and always will be a part of each other.” John Denver.
Your Woodside family of dogs has produced several of the largest German Shepherd Champions in Canada and the USA over the last 40 years. In my nearly 30 year career as an expert judge, your beautiful dogs have shone often in my rings whilst being the best in the show repeatedly. Your breeding will continue to shine in years to come. My puppy winning 4-6 months at USA Nationals 2022 is a worthy Woodside and will certainly know how to perpetuate your bloodline with honor. Rest in peace, Sandy.
AKC National Championship Dog Show Presented By Royal Canin to Air on ABC January 1st
The AKC National Championship Presented by Royal Canin® will air as a three-hour special on the ABC television network on Sunday, January 1, 2023, at 2 p.m. ET. The show features thousands of dogs from around the country and the world competing for the coveted title of America’s National Champion.
Hosting the broadcast are AKC Executive Secretary and spokesperson Gina DiNardo and noted sportscaster Carolyn Manno. This year’s AKC National Championship is the largest dog show in the Americas, with 5,376 dogs entered in Conformation from 50 states and Washington, DC, and 22 countries. That, combined with competitions in Agility, Obedience, the National Owner-Handled Series Finals, junior competitions, AKC Fast CAT, and a special attraction of Diving Dogs, brings the total entries to 9,395. Dogs will compete for multiple titles across various events and more than $150,000 in prize money, the largest in the world of dog shows.
“We are honored to continue hosting top canine competitors from around the world as we uphold the tradition of this prestigious show,” said Dennis Sprung, Show Chairman and President and CEO of the AKC. “The thousands of dogs descending on Orlando to compete in multiple sports are the best of the best and display responsible breeding and true athleticism. We’re thrilled to return to ABC on New Year’s Day to televise the crowning of America’s champion for dog enthusiasts everywhere.”
Jason Taylor, Assistant Show Chairman and Royal Canin Vice President of Marketing, adds, “Royal Canin is passionate about breeds, from providing them tailor-made nutrition to give them the best start in life, to admiring them in the show ring at North America’s largest dog show. We are excited to share this passion with ABC’s audience as they tune in to the AKC National Championship Presented by Royal Canin and look forward to an action-packed show highlighting dogs’ extraordinary attributes and the importance of responsible breeders.”
Award-winning company B Live Productions will once again produce the TV broadcast and the Livestream.
