 Teen Advisory Board
grit2 opportunity for Local Teens
grit2 is looking for students to participate in our Teen Advisory Board.

We surveyed and met with local teens this summer and found a significant need and desire for more support around teen mental health related issues.

As a result, we have decided to enlist the help of our teens themselves and create a teen advisory board for students in our community so they can help inform and develop effective programming.

Details are below, please forward to any teen that may be interested. Applications, found HERE, are due by January 15th, 2023, and applicants will be notified by January 31st, 2023.

You Are Not a Bad Parent: How to Practice Self-Compassion and Give Yourself a Break

Thu, Jan 5, 2023 @ 12:00 pm CST - 1:00 pm CST and 7:00 pm CST - 8 pm CST| Free

See GPS website for details.

Have you ever felt ashamed of losing your temper when parenting gets tough? All parents and caregivers hope for calm interactions with their children. But losing it doesn’t equal “bad parenting,” and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Join us and learn how to embrace a different story – one that not only gives parents a more accurate picture of what’s actually happening but also one which provides a road map for habit change.

Participants will better understand the skill of self-compassion to cope with tough situations. From that place of compassion and forgiveness, parents will feel freer and more empowered to take the next steps toward becoming the kind of loving parent or caregiver that we all strive to be.

Carla Naumburg, PhD, LICSW, is a clinical social worker and writer. She is the author of four important non-judgmental, practical books including Ready, Set, Breathe: Practicing Mindfulness with Your Children for Fewer Meltdowns and a More Peaceful Family, and How to Stop Losing It With Your Kids. Her writing has appeared in a variety of online and print publications, including The New York TimesThe Washington Post, and The Huffington Post.

Strategies to Foster Kids’ Social Skills

Understanding the perspectives of others is key to all interpersonal relationships.  However, students with social and communication challenges including those with high-functioning autism and ADHD, often have difficulties understanding that others have a viewpoint that is different and may have difficulties initiating conversation and responding appropriately to others’ emotions.

The author of 40 award-winning books, Michelle Garcia Winner is dedicated to helping people develop social skills, and what she calls social thinking. She returns to GPS to share her innovative “Four Steps of Communication” to help people better understand themselves, navigate the social world, and foster relationships.

Garcia Winner is recognized for her ability to break down abstract concepts and teach them in practical ways to help people improve their social problem-solving abilities and social responses. Participants will learn practical strategies to help young people learn reciprocal communication skills to discover the impression they are making on others, and what they can do to make living in the increasingly complex social world more personally rewarding.

Michelle Garcia Winner, MA, CCC-SLP, is the founder and CEO of Social Thinking and a globally recognized thought leader. She has created numerous evidence-based treatment frameworks to help caregivers develop social competencies and improve academic performance in those they love and support.
