Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday!

After the long period of lockdown, most businesses and many people welcomed the return to normality, but some might find the change challenging, adjusting back to a more busy lifestyle. Towards the later part of the year, the virus attempted to make a comeback.  In addition, kids picked up infectious diseases and passed that onto their parents and grandparents.

As the year draws to a close though, I think we are, in general, coping better with the busier lifestyle. The current wave of virus infections will hopefully be shorter and flatter. Let us look forward to a healthy and energetic new year in 2023.

The new WTQA Committee, elected in late October, is developing plans to improve communications with members, to provide information and services, and to organise interesting events for members.  With your support, I am sure we can get much done.  We do need your support though.  I am sure we have many talented people in our membership.  If you can help in any way, we would like to hear from you.

On behalf of the WTQA Committee, I wish you a safe, healthy and relaxing holiday.  Hope that your Christmas and New Year will be filled with joy.

Sam Au

President

Exploring the Six Harmonies - By Sam Au

I recently came across a passage in the writing of Zhuangzi (莊子), the ancient Chinese philosopher, which says

六合之外,聖人存而不論;六合之內,聖人論而不議。

The two Chinese characters 六合 (Chinese pinyin: liù hé) appear twice in the above sentence. The character 六 means six, and the character 合 as a verb means: combine, close or join.  As a noun, it means: match, marriage or whole.  Nowadays, Tai Chi and other martial art practitioners often translate 六合 as Six Harmonies.

Burton Watson (1925 - 2017), an American sinologist and translator, translated 六合 as the Six Realms and the above sentence as:

As to what is beyond the Six Realms, the sage admits it exists but does not theorize.  As to what is within the Six Realms, he theorizes but does not debate.

Participation in Martial Arts - By Suzette Hosken

In Australia, 238,800 adults 15+ participate in Martial Arts annually. That is 1.2% of  the adult population. 60,800 children 0-14 participate in organised Martial Arts  annually, which is 1.3% of the 0-14 population.

Looking at gender, in the broad adult group 56% are females, 44% males  whereas in children, the vast majority are boys at 70%. And drilling in a little  further, the largest share of participation in martial arts when considering age  and gender is in females 65+.

75% of participants engage in Martial Arts at least once a week, 46% twice a  week and 27% three times a week. Just under 5% of participants practised 7  times a week.

Tribute to Norman Chong
It is with great sadness that we wish to inform you of the passing of our former Committee member Norman Chong.  Norman was an enthusiastic Tai Chi practitioner and an ardent supporter of WTQA.

Norman participated in the annual WTQA competitions for a number of years and won silver and gold medals in those competitions.  Norman served on the WTQA Committee from 2016 to 2022.

Norman learnt from the late Master Wang Yen Nian of Taiwan and Master Ji Shou Xiang of China.  He established the Universal Tai Chi Academy in 2005 offering Tai Chi classes in areas including Brighton, St Kilda and Hampton in Victoria.  He organised several push hand seminars and workshops in Melbourne and Sydney.

Norman worked as a professional electrical and electronic engineer.  In 2019, after a period of semi-retirement, he established a successful business, the Smartgen Pty Ltd which provides electrical installations, air conditioning and solar panel installation services to the public.

He had been battling cancer for the past 2 years and passed away peacefully on 16th Nov 2022.  The WTQA Committee wishes to offer our sincere condolences to Norman’s family.
