Rare View Mirrors Exhibit at 4mostGallery

Event flyer with exhibit details

Visit the University of Florida School of Art + Art History's 4mostGallery from December 2-16 to view the Rare View Mirrors exhibition by Samuel Aye-Gboyin.

This series of photographs investigates individuals who exist in the margins of society - the real heroes in Ghana’s small-scale industry. The images question how we think about power, commerce, and privilege. These photographs are used as vehicles of expression to create new possibilities by placing ordinary and marginalized people within contexts of affluence, beauty, power, and authority. The inket prints on matte paper, which are inspired by Diane Arbus, elicit the feeling of the othering.

Details on gallery location and hours available here. For more information, contact: 4mostgallery@arts.ufl.edu.

Celebrating 2022 World Music Fest

Celebrating approximately fifteen years of making music in downtown Gainesville, our UF World Music ensembles performed at “Bo Diddley Plaza” on November 5, 2022. The concert featured seven ensembles, including:

  • The new UF Chinese Ensemble
  • Sunshine Steelers (steel drum band)
  • Pazeni Sauti (African choir)
  • mUndo Flamenco (traditional flamenco music)
  • Jacaré Brazil (Brazilian Instrumental and vocal/percussion ensembles)
  • Agbedidi Africa (traditional African music)
  • African Pop Ensemble (popular and traditional African music)

The unique mixtures of musical instruments, repertoires, and arrangements provided new perspectives on interpreting the diverse musical regions presented. The samples of melodies in our video sample reflect a physical and spiritual connection with the beautiful, where instruments and voices not only perform the music but loudly speak about the culture to promote people coming together to construct new sounds.

Every year, the ensembles present on-campus and off-campus performances at various community and social functions, offering moments of celebration for music and culture. A special thank you to CAME, the UF School of Music, the Center for Latin American Studies, and the City of Gainesville for their support. Our students, faculty, artists, and the community appreciate opportunities to explore the arts and the many musical and cultural styles from around the world.

“My guitar is my rifle”: Mexican Migrants mobilising unconventionally through arts

Comparative Migration Studies

This ethnographic study explores the individual processes of subjectivation and its relationship with arts as a form of political engagement, especially in contexts of violence and insecurity. It sheds light on the micro-level of diaspora mobilization by introducing the concept of “subjectivity” as a key term to analyze the transnational and unconventional political practices organized by Mexican migrants.
