The HRC invites applications for faculty residential fellowships during the 2023-24 academic year. The HRC fosters interdisciplinary work, both within the humanistic disciplines, and across the humanities, the arts, the social and natural sciences. The selected residential fellows will form an intellectual community of faculty of diverse academic ranks and departmental affiliations who will contribute to and learn from each other’s work by developing research projects related to next year’s theme at the HRC–Health and Medical Humanities–which draw from the humanities, arts, and social sciences to examine the systematic and structural inequities that produce health and healthcare disparities, and to create alternatives.
Deadline: March 1, 2023.

The Humanities Research Center is accepting applications for a limited number of Research Travel Grants in Spring 2023. These grants provide funds to support direct research costs incurred by faculty. These costs include travel to archives and other research sites, lodging, meals and expenses related to collection of data such as photocopying and photography fees.

The Humanities Research Center is still accepting applications for conference travel grants, which support travel by VCU faculty in the humanities to present their scholarly findings at major domestic and international conferences.

The Humanities Research Center co-sponsors humanities and humanistic social sciences events with departments, programs, and academic initiatives at Virginia Commonwealth University. The center makes funding decisions based on availability of funds and expected reach and impact of the event. The co-sponsorships represent the broad diversity of the humanities at the university.

Mentor/Mentee Program
The HRC Health Humanities Mentor/Mentee Program seeks to bring together undergraduate and graduate students with faculty and community organizers whose research focuses on the intersections of health and the humanities. If you’re interested in becoming a mentor or mentee, please fill out this Google Form.

Health/Medical Humanities Curriculum at VCU
Our group is seeking NEH grant funding to implement health or medical humanities curriculum at VCU, possibly as an interdisciplinary minor or other interdisciplinary program.

Call for Health Humanities Panels
The HRC Health Humanities Lab is currently accepting applications for panels related to health and medical humanities for Fall 2023 through Spring 2024. Panels should consist of 3-5 people, ideally include faculty and community members, and discuss research, issues, and/or topics related to health and can be online or in person. They should relate to the Health Humanities speaker series themes:
- Care
- Access
- Health
- Justice
- Pain
Please submit a proposed topic, list of potential speakers, and a paragraph explaining how the panel contributes to the Health Humanities and one of the central themes. Please submit all materials to Chris Cynn (cjcynn@vcu.edu). |

Environmental Research Incubator
Over the Fall semester, the HRC Environmental Humanities (EH) Lab co-hosted, with the Institute for Sustainable Energy and Environments (ISEE), an inaugural Transdisciplinary Environmental Research Incubator, with over 35 participants. Four research projects have emerged and received a share of $66,000 in seed funding from both centers. We thank all the Incubator participants and congratulate this cohort of funded projects:

- Black Urban Agriculture (Meghan Gough, Susan Bodnar-Deren, John Jones)
- Urban Ecosystem Adventure Art Playground (Corin Hewitt, Aspen Brinton, Kristin Carleton, Keenan Rowe)
- Circular Economy Hub (Jeff Shockley, Mark Wood, Rocio Gomez, Jennifer Rhee, Emily Smith, Lillian Lewis, Corin Hewitt, Kristin Carleton, Keenan Rowe)
More information on the progress of these wonderful projects will be forthcoming in the Spring.
Beyond Sustainability: Call for Collaborators
Beyond Sustainability is bringing together faculty from across VCU to develop research around university sustainability as well as curricular projects that aim to bring students and faculty into creative dialogue about ways VCU may engage with the pressing reality of climate change. In the Spring term we will be launching a number of projects, including a Student Climate Justice Incubator, as well as a series of peer-discussions making space to reflect upon and process climate crisis.

In 2022 featured 11 VCU authors and artists in our Meet VCU’s Authors series, with topics ranging from the genetics of child rearing to ageism; from slavery and social rebirth in the Black urban Atlantic to domestic captivity in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Britain. In early 2022, the HRC launched the HRC 5x5 Collaborative Grants. So far, we have supported 4 research groups and 19 faculty members in the humanities, humanistic social sciences, and the natural sciences. View the groups and see how you can apply here. We will continue to accept new applications as long as our funds permit. |

We organized our first international symposium in July 2022, which emerged from a collaboration between the HRC and the Obama Institute at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. The theme of the symposium was Indigenous Print Cultures, Media, and Literatures and it brought together over 25 researchers from 3 continents. Two publications emerging from this collaboration (journal special issue and edited volume) are in the works. Read the recap here. |

Our Spring 2022 Residential Fellows worked on issues of Race, Ethnicity and Social Justice; Kevin Clay, Michael L. Dickinson, Michael R. Hall, Jonathan Molina-Garcia and Indira Sultanić. They will present their research in an upcoming Research Friday event: February 24 at 12PM. |

Our Environmental Humanities Speaker Series will continue in Spring 2023 with three in-person lectures: Malik Yakini, Executive Director of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network; Heather Davis, Assistant Professor of Culture and Media at The New School; and Bathsheba Demuth, Dean’s Associate Professor of History and Environment and Society at Brown University. Dr. Demuth's lecture will also be part of the Spring 2023 Provost Lecture Series at the ICA. |
