ADL Tri-Counties Announces Educator and Ally of the Year

ADL also announced today that Rev. Randall Day, of St. Mark’s-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church, is the recipient of its 2022 Ally of the Year Award. This new award, sponsored by Santa Barbara residents Charles and Betsy Newman, honors a Tri-Counties resident who has courageously spoken out or acted in support of an individual or group confronted with hatred, bias, or bigotry.

“Reverend Day’s longtime support of all marginalized and minority communities in the Santa Ynez Valley has been a wonderful model of compassionate community leadership and inclusion,” said Meisel, who has worked with Day in responding collectively to multiple troubling incidents involving hate speech or symbols.

“Father Randall Day's unwavering support of our Jewish community and sense of caring and justice has been a light to us,” said Santa Ynez Valley Jewish Community President, Susie Pierson. “In addition to galvanizing communal condemnation of antisemitism, he and his congregation have welcomed our Jewish community (which has no building) to hold high holiday services and other important observances in their church while taking particular care to honor our tradition – and our appreciation is boundless.”

According to ADL Board Member and Valley resident Jill Goldworn, who nominated Day for the award, “When Father Day’s own church was victimized by youths who stole its Pride flag and posted a video of it being burned, he treated it as an educational opportunity, working with SYV Pride in distributing over 50 Pride flags and inspiring a community-wide showing of support for the LGBTQ+ community.”

Both awards were presented during a private reception on Sunday, December 4, 2022.

ADL is a leading anti-hate organization. Founded in 1913 in response to an escalating climate of antisemitism and bigotry, its timeless mission is to protect the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment for all. Today, ADL continues to fight all forms of hate with the same vigor and passion. ADL is the first call when acts of antisemitism occur. A global leader in exposing extremism, delivering anti-bias education and fighting hate online, ADL’s ultimate goal is a world in which no group or individual suffers from bias, discrimination or hate. Some Thoughts on Thanksgiving…..submitted by Jeff Winter

Obviously not a Jewish holiday……but Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays and marks the beginning of a very special time of year. Lord knows we have more than enough to worry about during these divisive times with great uncertainty on so many fronts….but this week we also have the opportunity to take the time to reflect on all the good things in our lives….like each other and our special community in Santa Ynez.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!!
